Long story short I bought a atv for my kids birthday and turns out the crank case is broken around the oil drain. He had it jb welded up. I'm a pretty good mechanic and all buy I've never welded aluminium, I've brazed before and wonder if that would hold... I'm not trying to split the cases and would appreciate any input.

Thanks.

I braze copper lines every day. I've also brazed copper to aluminum. It's pretty simple. Start off with a lower heat and go from there.

How big is the crack?

I've been numb for so long that I forgot how to feel
So I don't care if it will break my heart,

I don't know shit about welding BUT my gut tells me you are going to need another metal to melt around the two pieces of aluminum.

Nah.You just need to be able to melt aluminum in an oxygen free environment.

In oil? In water? In nitrogen filled room while wearing a suit with an oxygen tank?

All welding is shielded from oxygen in one way or another. Most use a heavier than oxygen cover gas such as Argon or Carbon Dioxide to cover the weld pool.

Even welding processes that don't use a cover gas still need a layer of slag or flux to shield the weld pool from the atmosphere while it cools.....

Nah you don't need an aquarium but you need to know a little magic to be able to cast the right spell. :facepalm3:

No, the gas covers the weld metal and also cools it so you just move your electrode and gas goes out automatically. It comes through the pistol grip on mig or tig. Co2 is about the cheapest gas.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)

We need an aluminum welding factory on the moon. Cold and no gases at all. We could produce massive welding jobs for just a few dollar. Shipping would cost you 35 billion dollars.

In Patlal's alternate dimension we could put a gigantic aquarium on the moon to do our underwater welding very cheaply. :cookiemonster:

They get little scuba tanks just like everyone else on the moon.

We need to build a hose to the moon first. Otherwise we can't fill that tank.
