Dunedin on yet?

Hi ya all Dunedinites. It's been many years since I tripped on these things. Figured about time to strech my wings again. I remember the usual places we went up the peninsula to find them. Was that long ago I will have problem identifying. Will go for a look in the next few days / weeks. Will post some pics for verification. Has anyone been out in Dunedin latley? Is there much about yet?

P.S. Anyone know what one of these are?

Looks like amanita muscaria, but to identify amanitas, you really have to see the base of the stem.

I agree with Koraks, it definatley looks to be amnita muscaria. You do need more detailed descrription just to be postive, you really dont want to mis identify this mushroom.

No. I dont think its Amanita muscaria. My guess would be - something of the Conocybe genus

Hi Eyefly

The 'shrooms are definitely out in Dunedin. See my post on the new season Ps. Semilanceatas. The Ps. Subaeruginosa are not coming through properly yet, but they will soon :smile:

So far for three expeditions this season I have managed to pick over 5000 Ps. Semilanceatas (liberty caps) from the Dunedin area, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding them if you know where to look.

P.S. the mushroom in the picture looks very much like an Amanita Muscaria, which are prolific in the Dunedin area. I have found them with caps over 30cm diameter :smile: I wouldn't eat them though (well, not again :nut: )

You should really pick up some kind of mushrom ID book- that mushroom is probably one of the easiest to identify, definately Amanita muscaira.

Thanks Guys. I figure it is Amanita muscaira. Not interested given others experiences with it. Just stick to the liberty caps i think. As I said, it's been about 15 Years since i had any. Do remember it being a hell of a lot of fun though. I'm 90% sure of what I'm after, but again, will just post a couple of pics to be sure.

Might get out tomorrow for a look....
