XP Bootup

This has happened the last three time's I've restarted my computer after being shut down... The windows disk integrity check come on, and scans my disk's....
I've also noticed a couple little things while it's running that aren't right..

My guesses are virus, or the harddrive is having strokes...any other thoughts?

Check windows update. Ive seen this problem with windows 98 before, where the computer shuts down before it can save specific information to the HD... so the computer thinks it wasnt shut down properly. Try windows update... thats your best bet

This could be caused by a virus (update your definitions and do a full scan) or a hard drive flaking out (do a full surface scan) but it's probably just chkdsk being a bitch and not unsetting the drive's dirty bit for whatever reason.

The quick fix is to open a command prompt and run:

CHKNTFS /X C:

The proper fix is to boot to your XP CD, start the recovery console, and run CHKDSK from there. In my experience that's the best way to make sure your drive it completely repaired.

I've also heard of this being caused by pcAnywhere, if you're running that software then go get the latest patch.

Oh, and if your drive is formatted as FAT32, run CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS to convert it to the NTFS file system. NTFS is journaled so it's much less likely to run into unfixable errors.

I think it was just shutting down improperly, it seems to be working fine now...thanks for the feedback...

I donno about that... it is journaled, but I have still lost files 'open files' when XP crashes.... I have never lost an open file with JFS (IBM's journaled file system).

Also, with NTFS, you can't boot to a floppy disk and access the hard drive... which is nice for disaster recovery. There are 3rd party tools that allow this, if you want to spend the extra $$$. I guess Micro$soft was too busy killing the competition to worry about including their own tools to fix problems... (they did give us the all power recovery console... woo... of course, it can't mount a corrupt volume, so it often doesn't do much good.)
