Montreal?
    #24809620 -

So I'm thinking of moving to a different city next year.

Any thoughts on Montreal?

I'm a fan of their smoked meat sandwiches, and steak spice.

I lived there for a little while. It can be a very cheap place to live, and there's fun stuff going on, but I encountered too many aggressive cokehead types for my liking. I think there's quite a bit of organized crime activity too. There was this one fruit store near where I lived that was never open because it kept getting firebombed.

If you drive a car, it's the last place on earth you want to be. The infrastructure has been falling apart for decades.

If not, there's plenty of stuff to do

Anywhere with a port is gang/mafia/hell’s angels territory. Montreal, Toronto, Hamilton, Vancouver, ect. All kinda dangerous places considering everywhere else.

To answer the OP though, I’ve never lived in Montreal but I’ve been there and didn’t like it at all. Very dated in a lot of ways, pricey, ethnic(I’m not being racist, there’s a lot of muslims and french speaking whites that like to keep it french). The traffic is terrible too, especially near the bridge. It also kinda smells funny.

I guess when I picture Montreal I just didn't picture shops getting firebombed by biker gangs, but we've got our own fair share of similar issues where I live down here in the states but it's more widespread and disconnected violent crime that's rooted in multiple systemic societal issues like poverty, drug epidemics, etc, etc.

Any city with old infrastructure, shitty weather, and terrible traffic can be a real headache. Mine is no exception, but being able to walk out your door and disappear into the sights and the sounds, and the culture of what is basically a giant concrete jungle gym for adults is worth the headache...most of the time.

Back in the late 80s when I lived there, that was always happening. I watched a biker gang riot from my apartment once.

My old roommate still lives there and says there are issues now with people being aggressive if you are speaking English.

I had a few crazy things happen in and around Montreal that ultimately made me want to leave. The final straw was when this place where I was trimming weed got robbed first thing in the morning and they tied us all up. I also had this coked up dude with a pitbull try to start a fight with me at the park and try to get the dog hyped up to attack me. Also my next door neighbor was this super angry guy from Haiti who hated my cousin who I lived with, and me by extension.

I never really had anyone specifically give me a hard time for not knowing French though. I kind of with I had put some effort into trying to learn it when I was there.

Visited there in October. Have to say I was not a great fan. The nightlife seems lousy, and it's really bad for all types of shopping: food, clothes toiletries etc. It seemed almost second world to me. The city seemed pretty ugly and even Old Montreal wasn't much to write home about. I definitely could not live there. Couldn't even get a consumable g&t. I'd heard rave reviews about it but I think  it's massively overrated. My overall impression was that it is a really dull city and me and  my boyfriend couldn't wait to leave lol
