First ever interstellar asteroid confirmed * 4
    #24797389 -

Out of this world!  Out of our solar system in fact!  Source

1I/2017 U1 (`Oumuamua)

It has an incredible velocity of 26.32 km/s (58,900 mph) relative to the sun when in interstellar space, which peaked at 87.71 km/s (196,200 mph) at perihelion, a speed up to 100x as fast as a bullet or about 12x as fast as exploding TNT.

that's pretty cool. whenever i see a shooting star it's amazing how fast it's going across the sky compared to jets, and it's so much farther out there...

the thread title reminded me of this song :smile2:

Pretty sweet.  It's already on its way out of our solar system.

Very little water/ice.  Made up of mostly rock and metallic materials with a red hue from millions of years of exposure.

Too bad we cant attach something to it before it leaves our system

the thing is moving away from us at 16.36 miles/second.  We don't have any means of catching up to it.  We'll have to wait for another one and hope we can spot it in time to intercept it while it's still coming towards us.

I thought about that too.  Reminded me of these books.

In the story, the aliens are riding into the solar system on a generation ship made from a large hollowed out asteroid.

Space is sweet. I was thinking about it, about going that fast. I feel like it would be hard to percieve, atleast based on experiences on Earth. Then, would you feel like you’re going 315,750km/h? I don’t think so. If you lived your whole life on that rock at full speed, living 70 years, you’d travel nearly 194 billion kilometers or just 2% of a lightyear. Feeling like you never went anywhere, did anything, or saw much worth note. Crazy. And we’re gonna see the stars are we?

its no different than being on earth.  We're moving through space fast as fuck, but we don't notice because we aren't accelerating.  same thing if you were on the asteroid.  you would only notice significant changes in velocity.  Like being on a plane.  you can feel the takeoff acceleration, but you can't feel the speed of the plane when cruising.

Being on a 13k rock is a little different than a 400m stone penis but yeah I get the science behind it. Just crazy to think how big everything is

It's a UFO. A cover-up for an alien craft adrift.

Clearly evidence of God, as well as our solar system being the toilet of the universe.

OH, just looked at OP source link. That's a scary photo. We discovered it as it was well past us.

Seems to be happening more and more, we notice these things after the fact and they have already passed, luckily without impacts.

We float in a soup of space rocks. Over the billions of years, we've carved out a path through our solar system. I can't imagine being alive 200million years ago, when impacts were more common.

It would be great to see some resources go towards space exploration, instead of war and destruction.

But, as we all know, there's money in space, it's just hard as fuck. Why not stick with what we've been doing and make money killing each other.:elmo:

But all of those precious metals just sitting up there. We could make gold and platinum worthless.
