Was Life Started By Asteroids?
    #13216510 -

So I noticed this article about Earth and the Moon being bombarded by asteroids, and saw this timeline of the universe. Now consider these events happen within a very short period of time (cosmically speaking) what are your thoughts that life here was seeded?  :mantis:

Asteroids may have brought a lot of simple organic compounds like amin oacids etc. The urey-miller experiment however proves that its not that essential since that could've occured early in the earths history.

As for actual life forms...yes it seems plausible. My microbiology professor has discovered bacteria in the stratosphere. According to a bunch of laws n shit they most likely came from outer space :tinfoil:

Spooky stuff.

The urey-miller experiment was the one with the amino acids generating from early atmospheric compositions correct?

Yup.

UV radiation is whats really bad for nucleic acids. However, the carbonized surface of many space rocks can protect the fragile genome of the containing spores.

Some spores are terribly resistant. There were a bunch of spores that are 1 million years old and scientists still managed to resuscitate them.

If a giant meteor hits a planet that already has such spore forming bacteria, a lot of material is blasted into outer space. This material would be contaminated with spores.

If the spores survive their interstellar journey and entry into the atmosphere of the recipient planet they could start life

Its quite a trippy hypothesis but more and more proof is accumulating that its possible.
