any people here big fans of death or black metal?? If so you should name a few of your favorite artists. Just wondering how many people are open minded to this genre of extreme music.
Does anyone play metal in the portland-metro area, if so pm me!!! some of my favorites are Cephalic Carnage, Immolation, Morbid Angel, Lamb of God, In Flames, Dissection, Napalm Death, Soilent Green, etc the list goes forever.

TO answer your title question, no! I've tried to give it a chance alot of times, I just dont get the music, it doesnt catch on to me in anyway. Metallica is good, some other metal bands are ok, but not blcak or death...

IN FLAMES IN FLAMES IN FLAMES!!!!!!!!!
Hehe, IN FLAMES are like my gods.
Then you have Opeth and Dark Tranquillity!
If ya'll haven't listened to Borknagar, I insist you do. Borknagar is just totally amazing! Really melodic but still somewhat in a black metal context. They incorporate synths a lot too. All around a fucking killer band. Especially the stuff with ICS Vortex on vocals and bass. His clean vocals are just totally beyond... So full of texture! And his death vocals are really great too.
They have Vintersorg on vocals now, as ICS Vortex has left to focus mainly on Dimmu Borgir (nothing agansit Dimmu, but Borknagar blows them out of the water). Vintersorg has his own band as well under the same name, and it is really similar to Borknagar. Really great fucking stuff! So full of melody and texture but yet so fucking heavy.... I can't get enough!
And of course Dimension Zero rules! They are like IN FLAMES but more focus on the heavy rhythms and speed... considering how it is Jesper Stromblad's band (the rhythm guitarist for IN FLAMES), that doesn't surprise me. That new album of theirs is called "This Is Hell", and I just downloaded it today and what I've listened to so far was really good!
The Haunted... Old Man's Child (really good, like Dimmu Borgir but with so much better songs)... Soilwork... Children Of Bodom... At The Gates.. just got some Satryicon and what I've heard is really great... Nile... Death... Morgion... Quo Vadis...
Who could forget Emperor! Emperor kicks ass!
Strapping Young Lad.... Just found a band called Trollheim's Grott that is pretty sweet.
Definitely forgetting some.... *reminds ya'll again to especially check out Borknagar, Vintersorg, and Old Man's Child* Peace.

I've been trying to get into black metal lately, but Soulseek doesn't seem to be working for me. Anyone got some album recommendations?

Yeah, In Flames really are a great band. They have a new cd coming out in a week or so, I hope it's better than Reroute to Remain. I mean, it was a good cd, but it just had such a different sound that I just didn't like. It's funny you mentioned Borknager because I was just listeing to some samples of some of their stuff and thought it was really cool. Which album would you reccommend? Speaking of Emperor(although I never really got into them), have you ever heard of Green Carnation, specifically "Light of Day, Day of Darkness"? Tchort, the ex-guitarist of Emperor composed it musically and lyrically. It's a one track 60 minute song....all i can say is wow, it's a true work of art.

As far as the more well known acts, there's Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Bathory, Emperor,Gorgoroth, Ulver(earlier stuff), Dimmu Borgir, Old Man's Child, Immortal.... I don't really listen to a whole lot of Black Metal, but those bands are the best representation of the genre.

Soundtrack To Your Escape! *whispers "I've had it in mp3 format for a couple of weeks now"*
Well I happen to think the cd kicks ass. It isn't like R2R in a way but in a way it is... sort of hard to explain. I think they integrated their old sound with their new territory a lot more... it is really good fucking dynamic stuff. IN FLAMES has always been so dynamic! I can't get enough of IN FLAMES. If you go their site I believe you can watch the music video to The Quiet Place.... but you can also type "IN FLAMES Soundtrack To Your Escape" into a downloading program and get it right now if you want. I'm still buying the album of course, IN FLAMES is worth it.
Anders is doing a lot of cool melodic stuff with his vocals on the album... it just sucks he can't fucking do it live! His voice is too fucked...

Ja, Borknagar kicks total ass. They have a new album coming out soon, like in June I believe, called Epic... look for that when it is out. Their last album is really good, it has Vintersorg singing. Quintessance is really good too, I might actually recommend that one because it has ICS Vortex on vocals (and bass). He's the bassist for Dimmu, his voice is soooo fucking amazing! My god! All the albums are really great though, but I'd say check out Quintessance first.
Their bassist just left their band.... I'm going to make a demo and send it that way.

Fuck ja man! That would be one of the groups I forgot. hehe. That song is amazing, all of their stuff that I have heard is as well. It really covers a lot of area, their sound... they even have one of those organs in there a lot of the time... the ones they used in the '60's where it is all warbling and everything... trippy stuff.
I just got some songs by a band called Runemagik today and from what I heard, they are pretty good. Sort of dark death metal stuff. Peace.

I'm in a short queue for both of them right now.
I downloaded some Helstar and some Cacophony as well, as you suggested. The guitarwork on Cacophony was fucking excellent! They could do so much more if they got a balance between them and their rhythm section though. I was having a hard time finding any Helstar but I did get at least one song and from what I remember it was really good.
And I now have I believe every Slayer album, so my speed education has begun!
I'm listening to Vital Remains - Let The Killing Begin, I really love this so far! Jesus said "I am". Trippy as fuck... I'm going to enjoy this! Ahh, it was just an intro... but I have Dechristianize going as well now and it heavy as fuck! This drummer is fucking amazing....
Wish me luck on the demo for Borknagar thing... its a long shot but we have but one life to live and there isn't any reason I can't do my best and try it out. My playing style is really fast and melodic, so it would definitely work out. hehe. Peace.
