According to the ATF, any weapon that doesn't have a good argument for being used in sport, is considered a weapon of war and therefore unnecessary to any civilian. Whether I agree with that or not, I don't know, that's just their stance. The USAS 12 gauge is a good example.. 12 gauge shotguns, even semi-automatic shotguns are legal, but this one is illegal, why? Well look at the difference between the USAS 12 and a legal semi-auto 12 gauge, from the design stand point. The USAS is compact with a short barrel meant for close range encounters. The legal ones are long barrels to increase accuracy as you fire at clay pigeons or bird hunting. Both can be equally as destructive.
Does the right to own an assault weapon mean you are free? And if you don't, you aren't?
Yes and no. Freedom is the ability to do whatever you want, so yes owning a certain type of gun without restriction would be considered being free. However, there are many things we're not allowed to do that we don't consider an infringement of our rights. We can look back to my comparison of child sex for that. Only the people who want to fuck kids would argue the laws are unreasonable and infringe on their rights to live how they want. Some gun owners have that same mindset. Again I don't know that I agree with it.
Are these regulations for the state's reasonable? Still have your freedom regardless?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_II_weapons
Yes they are reasonable. As much as I would love to own a grenade launcher or the USAS (because even the anti-gun people would have a blast shooting that shit off, and to say otherwise is a damn lie lol) I accept the fact that we don't really need to be letting just anyone get their hands on these things. If not to protect everyone else, then to protect them from themselves. Not everyone takes gun safety as seriously as I do. There's a range near where I live where only "noobs" go because the layout has people shooting from behind you, not away from you either. You should never be down range of a firearm and the layout of this range has people doing exactly that. How it's still open I have no idea. But it is, because people go there. Those people need to be protected from themselves.
Would putting assault rifles on the same list now make you not free?
Again yes and no. I don't need to retype that whole paragraph.
Not trying to drag this all back up. But didn't want you to think I was ignoring this.
Certain things in the reply stand out and I guess I just don't really understand
The whole defense to it all is the concept of "it's my right". But rights change and fluctuate with the evolution of society and culture. You seem to find grenade launchers and their restrictions Ok, but the thought of other weapons being put on there is an absolute deal breaker for you. Yet furthermore, you essentially ADMIT that heavy restrictions on grenade launchers do in fact "protect everyone and even themselves".
Isn't one of the biggest fall back defenses against gun control state that gun control doesn't work?
I'm sure there has been many more deaths from the guns in question compared to grenade launchers. While we could speculate all day to why that is, my personal opinions on the matter is this...federal wide and tough restrictions CAN work. And if gun crime is such a problem in your country, I don't see the harm in making some heavier regulations around them
And that is far from taking your guns away from you.
Second thing you said that stands out:
You keep trying to compare gun control to pedophilia. I wonder if maybe you are trying to invoke emotion out of me because of my affinity towards my kids and being a father, but I think it's a terrible comparison. Nevertheless, I suppose ill bite. This stood out in particular...
Quote: Only the people who want to fuck kids would argue the laws...
So does that mean that only people who support gun violence would argue new gun control laws/restrictions? After All, you have already admitted that gun control can work(ex. Grenade launcher talk above). Once upon a time it was some sick fucks right to have sex with a minor. When enough damage from such an act was noticed and slowly but surely new laws and age restrictions were brought in, do you think the sick fucks were screaming about "their rights? Their freedom?". You bet damn well they were.
Did it stop sick fucks from fucking kids entirely? No. So does that mean it was pointless though?
Same seems to be happening here with people and their guns. People see a massive amount of gun violence And death that could potentially be toned down with heightened restrictions or laws in place.
I don't see these ideas as harmful to your society in any way, that's all
Now with all that said...
But I also am jealous you guys can buy and collect guns the way you do. The thought or being allowed to open or concealed carry just blows my mind. And I would fucking love it! And the variety of cool weapons I'll never see here in a store also makes me jealous.
And this is All for the cool factor mainly. It would be fucking cool.
I used to carry a defender when hiking or camping in my rural area.
I love going skeet shooting
Guns are cool. Certain guns have a regularly usable purpose that may go beyond "cool" factor.
And agreed...id fucking LOVE to shoot a grenade launcher.
Prisoner1 once tried to explain to me the culture around owning guns and what the country was built on. And while I was raised with rifles and shotguns for hunting, I don't understand the affinity most Americans have for their guns. And while I don't completely understand it, I'm sure if I was born there id feel as strongly as you about it.
I've realized that it's a never-ending circular debate. We all have our opinions and emotions on the matter.
I realize there are so many God damn guns in the u.s. that stricter gun control probably won't do shit at this point. Those weapons aren't just going to disappear.
I'm going to refrain from posing questions and discussing the topic in the future. While you were fine, some people get extremely defensive.
I need to remain neutral and open minded about it all.
But I suppose I will always have some bias because of where I was born in the world.
Back to the OP...
It's a fucking tragedy that makes my heart ache. I'm sure Canada will see it's fair share in the coming years. The world seems so fucked
