Gibson is the guitar equivalent of apple * 3
    #24689663 -

Overpriced. Bottom line. An asian epiphone (under gibson manufacturing direction) can run 1/5 the price and play/sound just as good (objectively). 90% of the gibson price is the brand. The main reason Im making this post is 1 - Im drunk and 2 - I'm going to buy a beautiful epiphone hollow body guitar and no matter how amazing it sounds/plays, it will always be considered just an epiphone.

Epiphones deserve more respect. Either that, or gibson deserves less respect.

Honestly I notice a pretty fair difference between the two though generally just an action adjustment would change that a lot. Lower teir guitars can be amazing - I mean I love my PRS - but you wouldn’t catch me scoffing at it’s multi-thousand dollar counterpart lol.

Gibson I’m not the biggest fan of. Personally I think a lot of their stuff is done better in other places. The Les Paul for instance, has a doppleganger out there called the ESP Eclipse and it’s a dope fucking guitar.

Really depends on the model of guitar as well. A $90 epiphone acoustic from guitar center isnt what Im talking about. A nice epiphone can stand its ground against a $2k gibson any day.

Fender is kind of the same way.

Though Epiphone is just Gibsons cheaper line, like Squeir is for fender.

If you look into it most of the bigger music brands are actually owned by the same people:

Fender brands are:

Fender Custom Shop
Fender Japan
Squier
Gretsch
Jackson
Charvel
EVH

And here is a list of gibson subsidiaries: http://archive.gibson.com/Press/brands.html

A lot of big music brands are very overpriced, vintage instruments are also kind of a fixed market. Collectors will buy out limited runs to re sell for way more years later.

These days there are tons of great budget brands. I also kind of believe the whole "Made in America" thing is BS. I wonder how often all the materials used are actually American made

So many countries manufacture gear of various qualities, including the US. Even places like China make some solid quality budget stuff if you know where to look.

In fact you can sometimes buy gear semi direct from factories in China or other countries that is going to be shipped off branded and re sold at a much higher price :rofldrunk:

Totes. Nationalist hype nonsense. Granted, there may be a difference in some materials or a slight variation in manufacturing process that costs a few more pennies. Do these differences justify 5x the cost? Not at all.

So if I build a circuit board with chinese parts, it was still made in america right?

I think as long as it was "built" in america with american workers it would technically be "made in america". But maybe there is a more technical definition for manufacturing.

Like with people who build pedals for example, even if you use parts from all over the world because you're building it here it would still be MIA.

Totally agree with you guys-- I love my Epi EP335 Pro-- it's *functionally* indistinguishable from a Gibson, and as mentioned, it's a fraction of the cost. It sounds beautiful-- bell-butter-shimmery highs and hearty, tonally complex lows. Intonation is great. Feels smooth, solid, and *right*.
Perfect? Hell no:
The fit and finish are very good-- but not perfect.

-The cutout lining paint is flawed-- if you squint from under a foot away.
--THE TUNERS SUCK. No-- seriously-- the G-string tuner could actually be improved by replacing it with a literal wall screw and pliers... but I'll eventually replace them with locking tuners like I do on everything else anyway-- so whatever.
---A new nut while I'm at it for a few bucks-- the stock plastic one is meh.
----The 1/4" jack unscrews itself so fast you'd think it was designed without threads to keep it on. another few bucks to replace when I do the other tweaks.

Hardware otherwise? Generally great.
The tone and volume knobs are very smooth, electronics are quiet and potted (and tapped for single-coil use!) for genuinely wide and fun range of tone control.

I love the guitar!
It's really amazing that for less than a quarter of the price of a Gibson, the reduced quality "suffering" I have to contend with will cost me about $100 and 2 hours to correct. IF it really bothered me so much I wouldn't play it-- which it doesn't.

Is a Gibson inlay, modestly better appearance under close examination, and other baubles worth $2000 more? Nah.
But I'd still consider buying one someday if the right circumstances came around and it was the right one to add to the rack. I'd have to love it for IT-- not for the Gibson brand.
That's the important thing-- developing an honesty in your perceptions and expectations.

My Taylor 414ce is the best sounding guitar I'll forever and always love.
The Martin I bought that was twice the price of that Taylor? I sold it at a small loss after a year because I never had "the feeling" while playing it. It was gorgeous, but didn't sing in "my" voice.

Close second place to my Taylor? Seagull S6 that was 1/3 the price of the Taylor-- it's cedar-- CEDAR!-- but I love the way she sings and feels to play.

I don't detect any difference between American and Mexican Fenders-- both of my Strats are MIM, and they are both excellent-- I will not buy an American, because my MIM's are too satisfactory to me.

TLDR: It's the guitar YOU love, not the brand name on it.
:peace:

I picked up a dope ass tobacco sunburst Epi Les Paul and swapped the pickups for Pearly Gates and JB.  It passes the sound test.  Some of those Gibson’s are dope as fuck tho.

I also bought a used ESP to gank the pickups and gun metal hardware but it played so good I just kept it as it.  ESP is good in my book too.

I don't think either of them was really that expensive either. I believe he got them both in trades with a friend of his who's a pretty serious collector.

This appears to be pretty much the same instrument as the tenor guitar he has, and it sold for C$1400 a couple years ago. I think it's pretty cool that an instrument that's been in existence for the better part of a century can be that affordable.

Certainly agree but at the same time there’s a reason why even though guys like Zakk Wylde have mass produced Epi signatures like that but still play a special Gibson on stage. One reason I mention that specifically is because I’ve played both. I’ve played quite a number of Gibson/Epi counterparts now that I think about it. Those contour, wood quality, and hardware differences are huge when you are looking for it. I personally think I notice some things other people wouldn’t because I have really average sized hands and one of my fingers is kind of fucked up. Either way I do agree - but I still think those top of the line guitars would look a little nicer hanging on my wall.

I've owned some nice epiphones.  They are nice.

My current guitar is a 2013 gibson les Paul traditional.  The real deal. I wanted the guitar for 10 plus years and finally got it a few years back.

There is something about it i just can't put my finger on.  I fucking love it. The sustain and tone and just the way it plays...like butter.  Even if it's mostly placebo...ill take it

It is the heaviest guitar I've ever owned though and that's my one major gripe.  A session with it can be felt lol

The materials they use is what makes the difference.  It just lends itself to better vibrations and overall solid make up.  It’s not just added bells and whistles or the selling of a brand name.

Expensive guitars definitely have some things going for them. I think the main argument is for the cost the features and appearance don't really justify it unless you are rich.

Of course some people do just really like fenders or gibsons and if that is what they want to play then there is nothing wrong with that.

But there are a lot of people that look down on cheap instruments and have a really elitist status about their expensive gear.

For the price of a fancy Gibson or epiphone you could get a custom guitar made by a local luthier, or build one yourself to your exact liking.

There's some truth to this but it's also partially BS. People argue over woods making a difference all the time and the general consensus is with electrics they don't make a huge difference aside from weight.

Fancy instruments tend to have nicer hardware but for the price difference you could buy a decent budget guitar and upgrade most of the parts for a fraction of the price.

Also I have heard mixed things about say recent vs classic Gibsons/ fenders. For example 70's fenders are big collectors items now and sell for a lot, but most musicians from the 70's I have heard talk about them say they actually tended to be mediocre, that was just what was around back then so many people used them. But these days there are many better options that cost way less.

Companies often change over the years and the same is true in the music business. I am sure the quality of Gibsons and fenders have gone up and down over the decades.

For what it's worth my dream guitar cost like 20-30K:

Uli Jon Roth Sky guitars

They are limited run replicas of Uli's Sky Guitar, which is super badass. They have an extended range to hit high notes like on violins for classical style stuff.

They also have a pickup built under the neck as well as a really awesome EQ system. Not sure I will ever be able to afford one but a man can dream :drooling:

That's one other complaint I have about some big brands like Fender and Gibson, they have been around for years but often don't really do much innovating. If anything they tend to market replicas of vintage instruments at a huge mark up. They have definitely done their share of innovating too but a lot of it was back when they were actually ran by Leo Fender and Les Paul

Now they are just corporations capitalizing on an image.
