No, the Mexican ones are generally the crap $250 ones, the US made ones are better quality and cost a lot more, my '57 strat reissue (bought '02) was $2000 and it sounds like honey, or how I think honey would probably sound... maybe. Or maybe it was sunshine that it sounds like.
I think Squier is Fender's cheaper guitar line.
I found this link that is a discussion on the differences.

squires are actually asian. then they have mexi strat which are a bit more expensive then american strats that are the best. personally i like parker fly's. they are a bit non traditional but sound great and play better.

electrics are mostly dependant upon their pickups and hardware for that indefinable "tone" that varies (and diff people like diff variants of). Acoustis are more of a shot in the dark, it depends on how old it is, how the wood has aged, all kinds of small factors can greatly affect it. Which I think is cool since it allows for the random rare cheap ass acoustic that sounds like a dream. It also explains mediocre sounding $3k+ taylor/martin/etc guitars.
the only hard fast rule is that 99% of gibson acoustics suck balls.

I was told that the Strats advertised as American are no different thatn the ones made in Mexico and that Fender just charges more for it. Any thoughts or proof that says otherwise?
It would really help since I am also in trying to buy my first electric.

Assuming the hardware is the same, it really shouldn't matter (discounting a possible difference in quality of assembly, but it's doubtful). The whole american/mexican strat thing has been a myth for as long as I can remember. Maybe someone should snopes it, shrug.

I just checked Fender's site and it looks like the differences are in the pickups, the tone controls, the bridge, tremolo, and the number of frets.
Sorry for asking when I could have just looked it up myself.

Np, but there you go. They are totally different guitars in that case.

For anyone starting out (doesn't apply to most here) a used Ibanez Gio is decent, and very low priced. Of course I'd go with a Fender or Gibson if I had $ and more skill.

I'm pretty happy with my ibanez artcore electric. I also have an Aria acoustic (older than I am) that I'm borrowing from my dad and one day I will inherit my mom's 1976 guild acoustic (it's an amazing guitar).

Disco Cat said: I'm interested to know why old guitars are better than new ones.
Because arouund the late 80s companies like fender knew that they could make more money by mass producing guitars using cheaper assembly techniques that took a lot from the sound of the guitar because 95% of the people you see shopping in guitar center can't hear the difference between a stratocaster built in 1955 and one built in 2005.
In addition, used guitars (granted the previous owner played the thing and treated it well) have been broken in, like a set of hiking boots. The neck responds to human touch, grooves are worn into the bridge by many sets of strings.
Anyone who claims that the sound of a guitar is mainly a matter of what kind of pickups are on it is missing a very key point. A guitar is a piece of wood. It is sensitive. It REACTS to all kinds of touch, and every guitar is different. You can pick up two guitars assembled on the same line and they will play significantly differently. The way a guitar feels in your hands determines the finese of your fingers on its strings. The shape of the neck, down to tiny details, affects tone, vibrato, pitch and timbre. Necks that are screwed onto the body sound different than necks that aren't. Guitars that are hand assembled are very different than guitars that are made in cookie cutter fashion in a factory.

cpw1971 said: dude get the Fender Epiphone are cheap Japanese made copies made with cheap parts and cheap labor. how is the more expensive epiphones any nicer than the cheap ones??? are they handmade like a real Gibson???
first, as far as mass-produced guitars go, Japanese guitars are second only to USA guitars, generally speaking. epiphones are more than likely made in korea, china, or malaysia unless it is an elite model.
second, "real gibsons" are not handmade, they are made by CNC routing machines by computers. the only hand made gibson you will find is a true custom shop gibson which are several thousand dollars.
third, many of the middle-range epiphone hollow/semi-hollow bodied guitars have a very pleasant tone.

if you got a really good Gibson Les Paul, i would get a high-end Ibanez RG for metal.
at the very least, get something with a longer scale length like a fender or ibanez.

Well, IMHO you are... Strats are one of the most versatile mainstream guitars EVER. I've been playing fenders for as long as I can remember and not once have I been dissapointed with one (Squiers don't count). That being said, I also need that humbucker sound for some things, like slow blues, but for 98% of music I use strats.
