Sometimes the measure of friendship, quite literally, lies in a measure of what could be the poison of fear or the medicine of faith - and wether one owns up to ones true motivation to partake or decline.

A true friend partakes or declines given the situation, but their reason for doing so will be stated without pretenses or ego defenses. They will speak from the heart when agreeing or disagreeing.

...But since we are at this point, in the garden, on the spot, half a flower of Henbane offered - would you partake, decline, and most of all WHY?

A hypothetical situation that's not about me but about you.

I would henbane with you Asante. I'm not afraid to repose in the shade of the evening.

Back in my farming days we would get henbane volunteers in some of our bean rows. Not many, maybe two or three plants out of six or eight 180' rows. I don't know where the owner sourced his bean seeds, but occasionally some henbane seed would get mixed in. 

One of my favorite things to do on days where I knew we would be doing nothing but monotonous field maintenance was to roll up a henbane leaf and stick it behind my ear. The headspace was quite palpable, and it let the spirit of the plants shine through their dross matter.

We could walk through the garden and revel in the wonder of the natural world, perhaps not saying anything. Speaking volumes with our silence.

I just got done listening to a podcast with a couple of my favorite occult herbalists and they mentioned some of their experiences with the nightshades. It reminded me of this post.

I would not partake because I am not up to speed on henbane, it's active ingredient or what to expect.  Plus the name triggers the thought of datura like results..

Henbane leaf behind the ear, good one, you get the dual action that way.

Henbane has dual action, its tropanes are obviously intoxicating, but so is its fragrance. Its volatile oils are known to be "sleep inducing" and comparatively far less toxic than the Tropanes.

This is where I come in, hear me out.

Pilsener beer (Lager) coms from the german city Pilsen, and the herb Pilsenkraut (henbane) that was used in the beer centuries before hops were.

Obviously, drinking alcohol wih high levels of tropanes is objectionable to me.

However, what I intend to do is to create Henbane Liquor next year - grow some fresh henbane, cut it up fresh, into a pot with 50% alcohol and then distill it up to 75%.

This, if done right, should separate the tropanes from the volatile intoxicating oils, which are far less toxic.

The result is a kind of "Henbane Absinthe" where you have a bottle of 150 proof liquor that can be diluted to taste, but then solely flavored with Henbane.

Many people say henbane (and datura) stink, but thats a matter of being attracted or repelled by the plant. If the plant intrigues you, the scent is fascinating.

What do you think of the scent?

The scent is active?

I read this one post where a dude was talking about having a big brugmansia tree outside his window and he would get strange effects when he would open his window.  The tone of the thread was that it was just the "spirit" of having it around but if the scent can hit you then he really must have been getting something in his bloodstream.

I love the "stink" of all these plants, especially Datura. I regularly rub on leaves so I can have that smell on my hands.
Each time I've tried to grow henbane, it's bolted. Needed to soak seeds, or sow earlier on, I suppose.

I find the scent to be both figuratively and literally intoxicating. It is dark and mysterious, pungent and medicinal. It smells unambiguously poisonous - urging those who would interact with this plant to be respectful and use caution.

The smell of Thorn Apple is divine. And the flowers look trippy as hell.

Not sure if i would do henbane. Not sure im ready for it.
