Roleplay in oblivion, elder scrolls * 4

I've been replaying this game and actually treating it like a true role playing game for the first time ever. Thought I'd share the rules that have made it the most fun so far and hope for community suggestions.


I talk to NPC's out loud with my real voice, introduce myself, shoot the shit or say whatever is relevant. I'm a dark elf so I call people s'wit when they deserve it, and let race factor into how I ttreat others, at least insofar as I like dark elves better, things with lizards and kats are a little rocky.

Rarely use the map, or only in town or whatever makes sense. This is big, just try it if you never have. It plays like morrowind all of a sudden, its way more immersive because you need to keep track of your surroundings. What landmark do I head east at to get back to the road? Getting lost all of a sudden can become a reality. I mostly like the extra immersion though

Pay attention to fatigue, don't just swing and swing. Roleplay battle better in general, imagine that mace crushing through the shell of a mud crab, its salty juices splattering on your face, the horribly crabby odor! I love how much better the game gets just by thinking about things as if they were real. Like if you're looking at a tree in game, yes the graphics are old and it can reduce immersion but wait, imagine what you might see if that tree were in real life. All of a sudden its covered in lichen and moss, gnats and flies buzz happily around some rotting vegetation, a squirrel rustles the branches above.

I never change the difficulty. Keep it right at the middle, I used to just scroll to easy when I felt the game was unreasonably hard. But I'm now learning that there was just levels of strategy I wasn't aware of, alchemy is huge for one thing. Especially in a troll cave, I'll be wandering the cave praying I find just one more wisp stalk so I can make a poison. Then I finally do and "you find nothing of use" which in roleplay language means "the wisp stocks are full of maggots and/or slugs and unusable."

Anybody else do this? Got any suggestions? My character should have more of a backstory but he's just a dark elf immigrant who got unjustly jailed in the imperial city based on his race, and then his path changed forever when he met uriel septim. (I love uriels character, following astrology/divination, its interesting at least)

Eat, drink, and sleep at regular intervals like a regular person,
rather than sleeping just to level up

can even grab a mod to have the game introduce penalties for failing to do so

Frostfall (cold and warmth/camping management) was more of a Skyrim thing,
but Cyrodiil has some frigid peaks up around Bruma
that you could role play having to dress in particular warm gear for

Also as a Dunmer you would probably hate Altmer,
the Chimer (proto-Dunmer, before the curse gave them grey skin and red eyes)
left the Summerset Isles and relocated to Morrowind
due to Altmer disdain for Chimer worship of Daedra

the actual coded game files of how NPCs react to player based on race
gives a -10 modifier to Altmer player characters interacting with Dunmer NPCs
which is actually the same level of penalty a Dunmer player character
receives when interacting with Argonians

Have an alternate set of 'city clothes' and check into an inn/visit home/visit a guild hall
when returning from an adventure
then get changed into more suitable attire before going out buying and selling

Got the Morrowind overhaul working on my new computer recently. Looks so beautiful.

I tend to just mess around though. Farm a ton of gold off the scamp and then train a ton and make crazy spells :lol:

I made a caster rogue though and have a small mana pool which sucks. But my speed is ridiculous.

Spent awhile with the Scrolls of Icarus flight jumping to my death repeatedly. Good times.

Going to make a new caster and focus on a huge mana pool so I can cast ridiculous spells :awesomenod:

I definitely eat and sleep, my characters sleep at inns whenever possible, start the day with breakfast, drink heavily after a tough expedition. Try to get a house to call your own ASAP. I've been meaning to make a rule that I have a days worth of water in my waterskin every time I find some fresh water.

Never done mods, I was considering buying it on steam just so I could do that. I'm on 360 right now. Everytime I tried nexus I couldn't get it to work, I'm not computers :confused: Like I'm not illiterate I could get torrents to work, crack them and all that, pretty similar operation it seemed.

But with steam can you just workshop everything? Bing bang boom? I'd pay twenty dollars for that

I'd never heard that about the altmer, thanks. I'm not super familiar with the lore, I'm reading in game books for the first time. Pretending to be studying the foreign alchemical ingredients of cyrodil (or is it tamriel? get the province/continent name mixed up) as well as the nature of magicka, gods/demons, esoteric things of that nature.

My old quest was to find the philosophers stone, aka the oghma infinium, being an alchemist and all. Got bored of that, I'm just a dunmer making a name for himself now untl a better idea comes along

Whats that like? Its an updated morrowind right, not oblivion in the morrowind province? What are the most notable changes?

I've played morrowind a decent amount at least. Was really missing the recall spell the other day

No Steam Workshop for Oblivion,
Nexus Mod Manager handles a number of them, but others have to be manually installed
it is easy enough upon comprehending it, but there is a small learning curve in terms of where to drop files
it is on sale on Steam at the moment, but not sure purchasing it again is worthwhile
mods for Skyrim did more to overhaul gameplay and change up the experience
being able to fix things when they bug out/get the unofficial patch to patch them out is nice tho

Been considering giving skyrim another go. Wasn't a fan of vanilla skyrim, I mean I played it but... Roleplaying would probably make it worthwhile.

And with mods, maybe it'll even up to snuff IMO.

I swear oblivion is harder than I remember it being. I don't remember ever seeing groups of 5+ goblins....maybe I'm just remembering wrong but I've seen more grouped enemies

No workshop but one perc the steam version has is it auto installs in the right order.

For the Overhaul to work you need all the expansions installed in a specific order so you have to reinstall them if they aren't how they need to be.

The overhaul has a ton of different mods compiled into one program that autoinstalls but lets you pick and choose which mods you want to use.

It has a bunch of various mods to overhaul many aspects of the game. You can set different levels of graphics improvements to start and choose certain things like different tree and grass types/ amounts for certain areas. You can add nudity which is pretty funny, full on animal person dongs and stuff :lol: There also is some combat mods that improve different things. One I remember allows you to cast spells with weapons out.

I think it also fixes some bugs perhaps, it does a lot of random stuff. Here is the site: http://www.ornitocopter.net/morrowind-overhaul/

It looks even better on a nice computer, even my old laptop could run it with decent graphics though. I will literally stop and stare as the sun rises and sets over the water in game while I get stoned :tongue2: It's really beautiful, the water especially looks amazing. But the sky even at night is great too, beautiful stars and moons.

Also I believe there are mods that cross morrowind over with oblivion and skyrims graphics, I believe the latter is called Skywind but I don't think it was finished last I checked. The other is Morroblivion :wink:

oh heck yeah!

I would be stoked if there were ways of determining north without your compass in this. I'll have to pay attention to the sun, try to find a consistent mountain on the horizon maybe. Perhaps a north star but I don't travel much at night.

Dude do you know they recently released an updated upgraded version with drastically improved and modernized graphics? They resurrected the game.  You must get it for your Role-playing!

It's magnificent! Also there is an elder scrolls mmo for social role-playing.

My only playthrough I got invisibility and summoning. I cast a summons then invisible and the enemies just stand in place and get hacked to death. It made me able to kill anything in the game with no effort. I have no idea how the devs could be so completely lazy and thoughtless.

I love this. I really enjoyed Morrowind more than Oblivion for the reason of how much more immersive it is. I also like how the hardcore mode in Fallout New Vegas. Different atmosphere, but very cool to roleplay.

I adored every second of the elder scrolls from morrowind to oblivion to skyrim to ESO.

But I have to admit the witcher franchise has it beat for a superior fantasy rpg.  However in witcher you don't choose your character you are forced to play one particular character. But as a trade off every other aspect of the game from graphics to combat to story is vastly superior.

In my opinion the witcher 3 is the best game yet made by humans.

Mass effect andromeda and skyrim reloaded are number 2 and 3  RPGs IMO.
