Shouldn't it be "The Entheobotanical Garden"?
    #24423399 -

The prefixes "Ethno", and "Entheo" are similar but different.

Ethnobotany - "The scientific study of the traditional knowledge and customs of a people concerning plants and their medical, religious, and other uses"

Entheobotany - "The scientific study of psychoactive plants or fungi  that are ingested by a shaman or another participant in a ritual in order to produce visions or gain mystical insight."

So Ethnobotany is more concerned with the relationship between people and plants, while Entheobotany is more concerned with the plants that have meaningful psychoactive effects, the plants that bring about higher states of consciousness.

Fine and dandy but there are many post in the "Ethnobotanical garden" about plants that wont get you high. I am ok with this. I think the current name is fitting.

I am interested in many plants. This is the main forum I visit on the shroomery. If it was only about plants that get you high I would not visit the shroomery very often.

Ok.. So. is a Shaman an Ethnobotanist, or an Entheobotanist ?

I feel that many of the people who are growing plants here, and who regularly participate, have medicinal plants and plants that are used in folk medicine purposes for more than just the purposes of getting high.

I have a number of wound healing plants in my garden like Prunella vulgaris. It is a traditional healing herb as well as a weed plant in my region. I suppose the question is, Is the participant coming here and reading, into Ethnobotany which includes the plants that "heal", and can be consumed. Or is the participant merely here to gain information about plants that can cause an altered psychoactive state.? I suppose, that it is what a reader is looking for, and what the (focus)is.

I have waited to respond to this thread, to give it some thought and provide a salient response. Thanks for providing a topic that made me think.

Entheobotany - "The scientific study of psychoactive plants or fungi  that are ingested by a shaman or another participant in a ritual in order to produce visions or gain mystical insight."

In my opinion the second definition brings to mind the psychedelic experience subforum more than this forum.

Careful there, you might offend a few people.

We don't just discuss the use of psychoactive plants here but all plants.
That entails religious, superstitious, culinary and aesthetic use too.

Think about it, people visit these forums in the thousands, if there was truly an issue with the name it would have been changed a long time ago.

Besides Ethnobotany rolls off the tongue easier, and leaves our lispier members more dignified.
