Career in ethnobotany
    #6635650 - 03/04/07 10:28 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

I want to become and ethnobotanist in the future but im also interested in chemistry and am considering going for a major in chemistry. Would a chemistry major help in becoming an ethnobotanist or will I have to decide whether im gonna get a major in chemistry and pursue a career in ethnopharmacology or whether i should get a major in biology and become and ethnobotanist?

Do chemistry and botany go hand in hand when it comes to ethnobotany or would I just have to concentrate on botany and anthropology and forget about chemistry in order to become an ethnobotanist. Ethnopharmacologist would be a good job too but Id much rather being the one that gets to travel all over the world studying indigenous cultures and the plants and medicines they use rather than working in a lab all day.

I can't say for sure, and it also depends on the program you're in currently as well as the graduate program(s) you plan on entering, but I would think you'd need to double major in bio/chem and minor in anthropology

good luck!

I dont think a chem. major would aid in becoming an ethnobotanist. You are gonna wanna major in anthropology and minor in botany or either or.Unless you go to the UH' Manoa (uni. of Hawaii)They offer BS and MS in Ethnobotany.

I just got accepted into the Ethnobotany BS program at UH' Manoa.I will be starting there this fall.I also hope to get some background in chemistry.I want to minor in it.

Harvard used to offer Ethnobotany, right? Wade Davis got his degree there. Wonder why they discontinued it. This is the path I'm following, except majoring in botany and minoring in anthropology, as the former interests me more. Chemistry is interesting too, but if I became a chemist it would be for the wrong reasons and I'd probably end up in trouble.

And no. Cannabis probably isn't related closely enough to Salvia for any sort of grafting to go on. And why would you want to do this in the first place?

Are you an expert on that sort of thing then?
I am not

LMFAO I found that funny except it does kind of involve anthropology still very funny.

No it is actually a BS degree that I have half of. Although I did go to a Community college we studied mostly what people ate. Honestly I felt like I was a little kid in the classes.

I did botany in the hopes of one day becoming a ethnobotanist. You still spend way to long in the lab. I think you should study what you enjoy the most now as you might change your mind by the end of this course. You can always change courses if you don't like it.
