anyone ever listen to any country??...no not the lame pussywhipped alan jackson kenny chesy stuff....i'm talkin about some johnny cash, willie nelson, merle haggard,hank jr....david allen coe...ect.  There is some good music in it......especially when your drinking... :beer:

i love johnny cash, this thread inspired to listen to some, actually.  :smile:

anyway.. i have much respect for the old country musicians, this includes the blueglass part of country.  i enjoy watching bluegrass bands play, it's quite impressive music really, although i'm probably in the minority of people who listen to it..

hell yeah man, bluegrass kicks ass...i wanna get a mandolin. They can put out some great sounds...

yeah and johnny cash was a badass....anyone who hasn't should check out his version of "rusty cage" i'm listening to it right now...it's crazy if you've heard the soundgarden version before...

Yeah, Country is a huge and diverse movement with many splinter sounds and cliques, so it becomes hard to classify. There is much "country" music that I can't stand, but there is a lot that I like! :smile:

Some of which would be...

Most of the old authentic stuff -- acts from the earliest days of the Grand Ole Opry radio show, back in the early days of radio -- which was heavily centered around bluegrass and roots music -- on up through the acts of the fifties and sixties like Johnny Cash, and up into a few acts like Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson in the seventies...

The country spin-offs of sixties music was good too. I think Bob Dylan can be credited with this movement (like many movements), and consisted of the late Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, etc...

Neil Young has certainly had his county influences. He even cut a country album back in the 80's with such guest stars as Willie Nelson, and of course this leads us into the folk country sound of Emmylou Harris, and others, and of course Neil Young shared management (Geffen/Roberts) with most of the big acts of the California County sound: Linda Ronstadt, The Eagles, Etc., which were all good...

Lately, I've found myself being drawn to the "Alternate County" music movement, which seems to be a very loosely defined collection of artists, and much of which doesn't even sound like country -- qualifications for inclusion seem to be that at point a member was either a nashville songwriter, Nashville studio musician, or has labeled themselves, or been labeled as "Alt Country." :wink:

There are some very fine artists in that genre, including acts like: Robbie Fulks, Lambchop, Calexico, Lucinda Williams, Cowboy Junkies, etc...

Then of course, there's all manner of country blues, and folk country, bluegrass, western, central plains folk, rockabilly, psychobilly, cow punk, and all the other many little interesting combos and niches, past and present, that have a realtionship with "country" as loosely defined... :cool:

PS: Eh, I'm just scratching the surface here. There are dozens of names/movements I could have listed here, and I feel remiss in not doing so, but I'm a little busy at the moment. I think this a good start, though...

Oh, and let's not forget Western Swing!

There's this interesting crossover between 'hippie', 'folk', 'hard rock' and 'country', or something. 'outlaw country'? I dunno... that I haven't explored yet.

Heard a lot of good music in this vein down in Austin. It's a different 'feel' for sure. A different culture. Anyways...

you need to explore all of John Hartford/Vassar Clements, then.  Hartford is considered to be the father of new-grass, but he is so much more than just a form of bluegrass musician.  he basically did what the fuck he wanted, when he wanted, with anyone he wanted.  there's really no way to categorize him, hence his title, as there was NOTHING like it in the 60's/70's.  he would even pull joints out of his pocket and pass them around the audience

It really is all new to me.
As in, I started getting into it a few years back, did a little exploration, then got distracted.

It's interesting, though. I see Vassar Clements has some side project w/ Jerry Garcia, and I know just a tiny bit about all that GD stuff. Hooteroll (not 'country') is a wonderful album, for example. So, there's just so much to explore. I know (slightly) more about Incredible String Band and English Folk than I do the American / 'Country' equivalent.

if you ever watched Andy Griffith, you may recall The Darlin family.  Well, a few of those guys were actually a band called The Dillards:









these two are more mountain music than grass, but some of the Dillards is more typical 70's country
