Greenhouse spider mite problem, need help.
    #24266396 -

So last year I had a problem with spider mites and them getting to my plants. After spraying different fluids they went and came. I planned on cleaning out my greenhouse and spraying really good twice before starting the new grow; however, they did come back a month after. I have sprayed with neem oil, and also tobacco tea. I have also fixed some rips in the plastic so they shouldn't come back. I need to spray once again to kill them, but I don't know what else I should do to prevent them from coming back. Does anyone else have any tips or advice?

I don't have experience with a greenhouse, but I always get spider mites while my plants are inside over winter. It stays pretty cool in my basement, so that must keep them from getting too bad. I bet they like the warmth and humidity of your geeenhouse and are a much bigger problem for you. My spider mites disappear every year when my plants go outside. I guess that they don't like direct sun, and there are predators outside.  I don't think that my mites or yours will ever go away entirely, it becomes a matter of management. I think your best option would be to do the best you can with spraying your plants and sanitizing your greenhouse, then add some predatory insects. There are several that work well for spider mites, green lacewing and ladybugs come to mind. They are readily available online. While they might not totally rid your garden of spider mites, they will help manage them and other pests too.

Thank you for the reply, I guess I'll start praying and I'll pick up some lady bugs when I have some plants in there.

Also, thoroughly inspect and clean every pot, all benches, greenhouse frame, and staging. Mites will hide and overwinter wherever they can. Under the lips of pots is a favoured spot. Mealy bugs do this too.

They are more visible in the cooler months, larger and more red. They can go dormant pregnant. Hot and dry are their preferred conditions. This time of year they are more easily spotted before damage occurs, still being sluggish and showing their larger size and richer colours. Once the season is under way we tend to only realise they are present when damage is observed.

So should I just be spraying and taking care of them as soon as I see them?

Yes don't give these a chance to dig in

http://www.defenders.co.uk/pest-problems/red-spider-mite.html

Quote:
Red Spider Mite Life Cycle:

The mites go through 5 development stages. Egg to adult takes about 14 days at 21ºC, or less than a week at 30ºC.

Eggs are laid on the underside of leaves. Each adult female can produce more than 100 eggs in 3 weeks. They reproduce at alarming rates - 10 spider mite in May are capable of becoming 1,000 by June & 100,000 by July!

High humidities can reduce the egg laying rate of the mites.

During the autumn, when day lengths shorten the mites turn deep red in colour and migrate from the plants to hibernate in crevices within the glasshouse structure.

Red spider mite can overwinter without feeding and re-emerge in the spring and summer to re-infest plants.

NB. Artificial lighting may stop the mites from hibernating.

Attack them with a variety, rotate between chemicals, to ensure you don't end up with mites resistant to a single chosen pesticide.

Heres a story about mites from my personal experience

The other day i was looking at my grafts and noticed a tiny bug racing over one, parental instinct caused me to destroy it quickly.
Upon further inspection i also noticed a few empty strands of spider mite webbing.

So i realized the guy i just killed done me a favor and been eating these things for lunch...luckily i spotted another one and needless to say i let it live and left my grafts with a very safe feeling.

Moral of the story...not all mites are bad ppl.

Up the humidity to saturation. Spray with safer's soap solution. Any other potasium based liquid soap will do...  Make sure to get under the leaves where they hide. The next day spray plants with dilute Epsom salt solution, and the next day, finish them off with a strong pesticide of your choice, use VERY sparingly if the end goal is to consume the plants...

Alternately, just transplant the plants outdoors and the spider mites will usually go away on their own due to predation by other bugs unless it is very hot and dry.

Our humidity and temperature is very high. We have 50~ Humidity and Temps as high as 118F at times. The circuit breaker keeps going down from being overloaded.I have sprayed my greenhouse and don't see them anymore. I will spray once again after I do a new line or I see some bugs.
