Can depression and anxiety actually keep someone from working?
    #24165929 -

I have a friend who has a 25 year old brother who still lives with his parents and doesn't work because he claims his depression and anxiety is too severe. She says he sleeps until the late afternoon daily, wakes up to eat, and goes back to bed. Part of my feels sorry for the guy since he is a really nice person from what I have seen of him, but the others part of me says he's just using mental illness as a cop out to remain lazy and not work. What are your opinions?  Hope this didn't make me sound like a dick lol

someone can be so depressed they drive a fork lift into a wall. or into a crowd of shoppers.
from being distracted and not paying attention. or from being sleepy.

either way. depressed people can be really selfish sometimes..

Anxiety too severe to work? I'm sure there are people worse off than I am, and I'm pretty bad. If I had my way, I'd probably never leave the house. I can suppress it just enough to work but that's about it. It's practically impossible for me to socialize with people I don't know well. My brain just locks up and the longer I go without managing to carry on the conversation the more stressed I get about the whole thing.

I don't doubt there are plenty of lazy people who use it as an excuse, but I wouldn't just automatically rule it out as a possibility. If it's legit their behavior could be used to help determine whether they're full of shit or not. Like I don't just avoid going out to do things I don't like or are tedious, but I also avoid doing a lot of fun shit as well.

Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear.
I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear.

Anxiety and depression can most definitely be physically debilitating. Don't be fooled by the apparent invisibility of these illnesses.

Wow, quite interesting!

Thanks for that, I had completely forgotten about this happening.

Not to steer my own thread off course, but I wonder what causes someone to make the decision to take others with them versus just blowing your brains out alone. I guess some people get into such a dark place that the idea of death is just so appealing that it overrides their morals?

they are cowards and cant do it alone.

or they must punish other people in some misguided attempt at placing blame on something besides the source.

Hey man, that's a lot of hate you seem to be holding. Anything you want to talk about?

Some probably feel ignored, and see public suicide as a way to be noticed. A certain amount probably have to do with  feelings of resentment and 'getting back' at the world. I'm sure another portion don't plan their suicide, and public methods are just the easiest option immediately available to them when the decision is spontaneously made.

Every single post you have made in this thread is an example of you passing negative judgements on people you have never met, seemingly based solely off of claimed mental illness. The vibe you give off in this thread is one of thinly veiled anger.

Which is why I ask if there is anything you wish to talk about. What is the reason for your anger?

well anyone who ends their life or takes someone elses life because they are depressed
is cowardly and should be frowned upon. i guess that can come of as hateful when someone elses
depression can not be helped because society is too fucked up to do anything helpful for that person.

so ya that makes me angry. doesnt it make you angry?

Do you think severe depression should be classified as a disease?

I will tell you that depression and anxiety can, and often does prevent one from working too. Your friend's brother could definitely use some mental health help.

I always hear this and I guess it comes from the sentiment that those who commit suicide are just taking the easy way out, however humans  (and most if not all animals for that matter) have a deeply rooted instinct to survive, and we will go to great lengths to do so. To kill yourself is to go against and overcome that survival instinct that has been hardwired into our brains from millions of years of evolution. So I wouldn't say it makes them a "coward," necessarily. I would think it would take some amount of not giving a fuck, which could be interpreted as a kind of courage.

that has nothing to do with anything. classified as a diesease under current guidelines? no

because the current guidlines are not even designed to identify real mental health issues.
this country is a clear example of that.

is it a disease that makes someone sick? yes. of course it is. but that doesnt mean it is never
a self inflicted wound.

why would you answer my honest question with a 'loaded question'?
