this might sound crazy and blasphemous...

but i am pretty sure they are going to keep melting, as they have since the ice age started to end.

Why is the political answer to this a tax on the thing we exhale and trees breath?

Plants living on earth today evolved to take advantage of pre industrial revolution CO2 levels. The excess CO2 doesn't significantly increase plant growth because there are other limiting factors such as water and nutrients. Speaking of nutrients, we are quickly running out of phosphate which is necessary to support 7 billion people in the planet.

My Yukon town, Dawson City, uses an ice bridge in winter to cross the Yukon river. This year, the river did not freeze completely and a lot of old timers were commenting out loud how uncommon this has been all their many years.

The north is definitely warming up fast. Not stoked on the Yukon potentially becoming the next California.

The Yukon is filled with so many resources though... It's part of Canada's saving bank account. 50 years from now, Northern Canada will start becoming mining towns and eventually turn out to be ghost towns... Hopefully an economy besides the resource will evelop

Have heard that apparently Kansas will basically see desertification,
while the prairie provinces will end up with Kansas weather.
My mother and grandparents talk about how the prairies see more tornadoes now than they used to,
but personally kind of figure that has to do with better connectivity and information sharing in the modern era.

But who knows, maybe another 40-50 years from now Dorothy and Toto won't be in Saskatchewan anymore.

A lack of sea ice is not normal in the interglacial periods. The last time the arctic was free of ice was 3.6 million years ago.

You'd be surprised. Mining is the number one industry up there, but there are a lot of independent operations and a good majority of folks understand that not all resource extraction is sustainable. Also, the Yukon has some thriving native bands who have a history of managing resource extraction with preservation.

If Ottawa wants to make a large withdrawal on its Yukon savings account, expect resistance.

If the mines closed, How many of the 30000 people up there would be out of a job?

As for resistance, the Feds would create lik 3 huge national parks where the ressources aren't in order to tap the resources. That's been the way to do it foerever.

All but 2000 of those people live in Whitehorse. The rest of the Yukon features a much more sustainable lifestyle. Folks may lose their cars, but houses are wood heat and everyone knows how to hunt.

Don't think I'm saying Yukoners are against mining, they aren't. It's a way of life up there. But it's also their home, and the idea of letting a foreign government (Ottawa) pull a smash and grab will never be palatable.

These traditional territories are still actively occupied.

Fake news. Can you provide a source that he was born to an unwed mother?

However, he is an idiot that believes the melting sea ice is a hoax.

"The ice cap is floating, so if it melts this won't raise sea levels."

Bullshit.  The ice is pure water and less dense than the salty sea water so the water level does in fact rise when the ice melts.

It's a tiny effect, but I guess technically you are correct.

Theee was an interesting comment on that page though. Melting ice is a huge climate buffer. It takes the same amount of energy to bring water from 32 to 33° as it does to bring it to nearly the boiling point. There is a tremendous amount of heat energy that is absorbed simply melting the ice that once the ice is gone will be available to heat the atmosphere and oceans. A lack of sea ice means a rapid increase in sea temperatures and air temps.

Quote:
It requires a lot of energy to change the state of ice to water. That change, with no rise in temperature between the point at which water is solid, and then water is liquid, uses 80 times more energy than it does to raise the temperature of water between, say, two degrees and three degrees, or three degrees and four. Thus, currently, melting ice provides huge attenuation to the warming we experience. To melt, ice literally sucks heat out of the sea and thence the atmosphere and the land; delaying the worst effects of our actions. This is high school physics -- clearly way beyond the level of C.Booker, J. Delingpole and Co. Check it up. [Link provided to basic physics site].

As a consequence, as the ice disappears, the massive amount of energy currently being used to melt ice becomes suddenly available to warm the ocean and the atmosphere -- warming which will then be at a rate 80 times faster than we're experiencing today. So the rate of melt accelerates the less ice remains. That's why extrapolating sea level rise from the current rate of melt is likely to produce a false sense of security.

This is why scientists are so concerned. They understand this. Polar ice is the shock absorber on the suspension; the buffers on the carriages; the pendulum on the clock. And it's also the canary in the coal mine.

One view may be that global warming is good for business... temperatures rising will generate global demand for things like air conditioning. Certainly it would increase demand for the construction or renovation of heat proofed housing, and many other things that I'm probably not considering.

And on the other hand all we loose is a few species of animals and a bit of damage to the climate. Which we never really could exploit much anyway.

I can unfortunately see how commercial interests would be looking to capitalise on this. Being able to sell and provide ' the solution '.

It's the same reason big companies excluding Tesla won't support or invest in solar panels, because there's no industry and limited return on investment from a self sustaining solution. They want the mining industry, the global trade, and everything that comes with the fossil fuel industry.

Some food for thought

Good for business as in having to abandon or fortify buildings such as this parking garage in Florida that now floods during monthly high tides due to sea level rise. There was no storm responsible for this flooding that was deep enough to allow an octopus to roam around.
