Inline vs. squirrel cage blowers

What's up everyone

So I know this has been talked about before and that RR and some other
old hands have claimed that inline blowers like vortex and hydrofarm
don't really work for laminar flowhoods and that squirrel cage blowers
are necessary.

I have also seen some old hands, like damion5050 and others, use inlines
for their builds, but I haven't seen any testimony as to how much they
like them or if they work well after extended use.

So I want to hear from those of you who use inline blowers in your hoods.
Do you like the inline and does your hood function properly? Have you
noticed any unnecessary wear and tear from the spinning vortex of air as
RR claims?

Those of you who have used both squirrel cages and inlines, do you notice
a significant difference in the functionality of the hood?

I'm trying to find a blower right now and inlines are much cheaper and
can produce the cfms I need for my filter where a squirrel cage blower
is more expensive for the size I need.

Any help or insight is appreciated!

try craigslist.  you can typically find a person getting rid of their old squirrel cages for a decent price.  of course it would require plenty of cleaning.

Sorry can't comment on inline vs squirrel... I use squirrels only.

Ya I've checked. There is one guy who has one but no specs. Says it was
for a 4 ton furnace so I imagine it's big. Guess I could try and dial one
down :shrug:

The inlines I have seen on ebay are like 90 bucks though brand new for
exactly the size I need, though

Yeah I'm also curious.

I was working on a build last year and saw RR say the same thing. I've never seen a post of anyone saying t caused issues though and I think quite a few people have use inlines. They seem to be cheaper and take up less space.

Ya they are significantly cheaper and you can mount them inside the
hood itself supposedly making a much more uniform and sleek build.

I'd really like to know for sure if there are any downsides before
pulling the trigger on one

I have built a small flowhood using an inline blower and it works great, I don't remember any of my specs now but I do know that the blower I got was designed to be safely run with a speed controller which I did, I have used the hood for about four years with no significant problems.

IMO if you haven't found too many posts saying inlines are terrible it might be worth checking out.  RR does have a good point but if it works, it works.  The goal is clean cultures after all.

From what I gather the squirrel cage blower works better as it can handle the static pressure better than a centrifugal.  It can also be difficult to find a centrifugal that produces enough cfm for a larger filter.  They prolly work fine for a small filter (12"x12").  Check HVAC/furnace repair or junk yard type places to get a used one.  It'll need cleaned up as mentioned.  Here's one I cleaned up and replaced the motor on for about $80 total.

Did you know the specs on the blower before you bought it? I have
checked a few hvac places via phone call and none of them know the specs
on any of the used blowers they have. I guess I can just get a big one
and dial it down right?

I found one for less than 100 that could run a 2x3 helpa with a prefilter. I will check when I get home think I bookmarked it.

Dude please do!? A squirrel cage or inline? I have found a couple inlines
that could do the job easily for under 100, too.

Inline. Pretty sure it was under 100. Either way it was not much more than 120 I think.

No idea on specs...you can either back it down with a speed adjust or you can dampen the intake.  I picked mine up for $20 though could probably have paid $10 if I haggled.  I replaced the old 1/5 hp motor with a new 1/3 hp motor for $50 and spent $10 on paint.  Again, I'd shy away from an inline, especially if you're running a larger filter.  Here's a chart illustrating the drastic drop off in CFM of an inline due to static pressure.  Pretty sure most HEPAs have about 2"SP with an additional .2SP for the pre-filter.

The one I have is 2'x2' at 1" sp, so I need a blower that can blow at least 450
cfm at 1.2" sp. I've been looking at an inline that is 1100 cfm at open
air and the manufacturer told me it will work at the sp needed.

But if you scored that blower for 20 bucks then I might as well just
try to get a used large 1/3 hp motor and dial it down a bit. Thanks for
the insight mange!

I have 2 filters, I may just buy an inline and do both then compare and
contrast :shrug:
