he didn't accidentally make the case. He intentionally explained why people would like Trump, rather than simply labeling them racists, bigots or whatever -strategies that will obviously never convince anyone- he is formulating an argument against Trump that some Trump followers will hopefully understand and maybe listen to (doubtful). In order to do that, he has to first empathize with them, the realities of their situation, and understand their reasoning in order to argue against Trump effectively. It's a pretty simple and traditional strategy
