Very interesting concept. It probably holds water, too. 

Myself, I have a strong ego. It usually never gets projected out into the world for others to see, but it is there... always having my thoughts filter through this, this idea of self importance and superiority.....

It is in the process of being put out to pasture. It seperates me from a state of just being... I'll be playing bass or typing here or something, and a portion of my thoughts gets directed to "hehe, wow, I rule all", and there is no benefit from it. It just drains away focus from actually doing what I'm doing.

I tend to not play ego games anymore either, and if I am doing so, it is plainly obvious to me that I am, and how I shouldn't be. So progress is being made, thank god. :grin:

So I ask you, gentle reader, what does humility mean to you?

Humility means bowing to the universe and surrendering your free will to the divine will in faith and trust.

Humility means to kiss a tree and to sacrafice yourself for the benefit of a "lesser" being, whether perceived or actual, if such a thing even exists outside of the ego, which it probably doesn't

Humility means being able to look at your loved one in the eyes and apologize from the depths of your soul for past errors and lessons learned.

It is maybe the teacher learning a few tricks from the student.

It is a completely selfless act of expressing your unconditional love and compassion for any given thing, and is impeccability of the highest order.

We must realize that free will is a universal and absolute right, but impeccability calls on the self to surrender free will to divine will in faith and trust. That is humility.


What is humility?
Hold a candle in the darkness. Ahh, light.
Now, hold a candle to the sun. Where did it go?

With the absence of light the candle is very noticeable.
With a massive ball of plasma burning at millions of degrees.. the candle disappears in comparison. It has been humbled.

A helpful bit of knowledge along the path of overcoming the self-important view is to understand that feelings of discouragment or shame about the self-important view are themselves an excercise in self-importance.  The root logic behind discouragment and shame is the thought "I should be better than this."  This is clearly quite self-important!  We are setting a standard for ourselves and calling it superior.

Overcoming the self-important view is a tedious and time-consuming task.  Having first recognized the ill-necessity of pride, we might feel profoundly liberated, naturally opposed to pride and arrogance.  Although we may feel this way, we still have mental habits which will eventually reveal themselves, guiding us in prideful directions.  This is why it is helpful to recognize that discouragement is unhelpful along our journey to humility.  If we understand that discouragement is of the same nature of the prideful mind we wish to oppose, we will encounter few obstacles, and our path will be joyful.

When first beginning my training, I became very harsh with myself whenever I discovered myself following a prideful mental habit.  Eventually, I discovered that behaving in such a way was actually perpetuating those mental habits.  Although I still have many mental habits of this sort, they are not half as troublesome.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.
