Any tips on learning the metric system?
    #23075592 -

Hello,
I am looking for any tips on how to learn the metric system. I just bought a book to help but I figured I'd see what the community can add?

Thanks

Everything is in multiples of 10. Not too hard to wrap your head around really. Beyond that, what exactly are you trying to learn about it that you don't know already?

QFT.  It's that easy.

It's just base 10.

1ml
1000ml = 1L

1mg
1000mg = 1g
1000g = 1kg

1mm
10mm = 1cm
100cm = 1m
1000m = 1km

I would say the hardest part is remembering all the prefixes like nano, kilo, giga, and all that.  It's a really simple base 10 system though.  Compared to imperial it is super simple.

Being American it's not taught to us. So I was hoping that there was some way to learn how they interlock, but maybe this wasn't a good idea?

1 foot = roughly 30 cms

1 oz = 28 gram

33 oz = roughly 1 L

2.2 lbs = roughly 1 KG

0.6 miles = roughly 1 KM

The hardest part for me is remembering that one liter is equal to one cubic decimeter.

So you're trying to learn conversions? That's a little different than just learning the metric system on it's own. I don't know man, just find a good conversion chart and memorize some equations I guess.

If you're just trying to learn the metric system itself, I doubt a book is even necessary. A 10 minute youtube video would probably teach you everything you need to know about the metric system for daily usage.

It's easy to remember that stuff because all the prefixes actually mean what they are.

For example a centimeter is one one-hundredth of a meter.  Centi for one hundred.  Like centennial.

A millimeter(or millilitre) is one one-thousandth of a meter or litre.  Milli for a thousand.  Like millennial/millennium.

Kilo- definition, a Greek combining form meaning “thousand,”  - just like A kilobyte is 1000 odd bytes, a  KILOmeter is 1000 meters.  Everything you need is actually in the word itself.

I think the hardest part is just getting used to it. ie I have a good sense in my head of how long a mile is, but I have to think for a moment to get a similar impression of how long a kilometer is. The metric system is only really difficult when it clashes with another system which is customarily used in its place.

And I'm sorry, but I'm not much of a patriot when it comes to this, the American system of measurements is fucking dumb. We should have gone metric 100 years ago. The only other country in the world that uses an alternative to the metric system is fucking Myanmar. Myanmar! You NEVER want your country to be on the same short list as Myanmar.

Oh yeah I see what you mean there.  Especially since metric tends to use decimals and in imperial fractions are standard.  It just takes alot of practice going back and forth I think.  I have to use both in my work so I am getting better, but even most of the guys who have been at it 30 years, most of them still have a bit of trouble with it at times.
