Who's online idea
    #2300702 - 02/04/04 12:53 PM (19 years, 11 months ago)

The Lycaeum have fedwatch which I think is quite cool. Maybe The Shroomery could have something similar? I thought that with the Who's online page, if a not-logged-in user is from somewhere like .mil .pol.uk etc then instead of showing up as Anonymous their resolved IP address will be displayed.

I think it's good that when the feds browse the site, they will have to do so in the knowledge that everyone knows where they are coming from, and what threads they are viewing.

Perhaps not the whole resolved IP but just the .com/.org/.mil if it's relevant, i'm sure some people don't want their IPs displayed.

That's kind of missing the point. The idea being that anyone coming from a .mil/.pol IP is working for the military or the police so their full IP is displayed both to discourage them from coming here, and so that everyone else can see what they are doing and exactly where they are from. I deliberately excluded .gov because there may be people in 'legitimate' jobs working for the government (e.g. environment, social, health etc) but I think anyone with a military or police address deserves to have it published.

if your insistant on resolving and displaying the whole IP, then i think it's a bad idea.

Hmm... We appreciate the idea and the input, but we're not going to do this for several reasons.

1) .mil is for military personnel, who generally are NOT cops or narcs. I've know plenty of people who were in the armed services who did lots of drugs and generally "partied down." If someone in the armed services is a member of this community, then we don't want to narc them out.

2) To resolve an IP address using it's reverse DNS record, involves making a call to that DNS server, and will involve system and internet resources, and generally slow things down. Especially, for servers which have no reverse record, where we have to wait for a timeout to occur.

3) My guess, is that the people we really need to worry about aren't going to be using obvious resolvable IP addresses. They will either have no reverse DNS record (be in stealth mode), or they will be using a mass consumer service such as AOL or MSN.

4) We try not to modify the board software itself, unless there is a compelling reason for doing so, as then we have to track, and propagate, these modifications across board upgrades, and this generally makes the upgrade process much more complicated and problematic.

Thanks for the idea, but I just don't see a compelling reason for doing this. We do occasionally investigate a member when we have suspicions that they may be LEO, but these people aren't very easy to catch. My advice, as always, is to be very careful with what you say and to whom you say it -- be smart and be safe!

Addendum: We might script such a thing for our own internal usage and monitoring, but broadcasting such information publicly would lead to nothing but trouble and misunderstandings -- we're trying to keep the witch-hunt factor to a minimum around here...
