Febuary 1st's Great Shroom Adventure: FLA (Pics!)
    #2291458 -

Hey Shroomers,

Well i have to say, this morning was a most beautiful time to be amoungst the Shrooms and amoungst the cow manure piles from which they grow from.

And luckily i brought along the digital, to document the experience, and to share with everyone here the day the Shroom Gods shined upon me many Shrooms for the eyes to see and plenty enough to pick and collect and print and eat.

Onward with my journey of the Shrooms.

First I came across a couple of the omni-potent Copelandia mushrooms;

Copelandia cyanescens

Next i was happy to find a nice cluster of Pan subbs;

Panaeolus subbalteatus

And now i have reached my upload limit for the day.

All-in-all i collected about 8 Copelandia cyanescens,
And about 2 pounds of the Pan subbs.

The entire field was literally littered with subbs.. they were everywhere, i've never seen anything like it before (not with Pan subb's at least). I picked a couple pounds and left at least several other pounds of fresh subbs never to be picked. They were just everywhere, it was dizzying to see so many subbs.

No Cubensis were found but i'm sure that there are a few out there here-and-there.

Only about 8 Copelandia's,

The Subbalteatus took the center stage and i couldn't walk an-inche without stepping on them as the pasture was simply just covered with them.

Ok another image was successfully uploaded;

Panaeolus subbalteatus

Very nice GreatOne! So I am assuming from your post that the subbs were found in a farmer's cow field as opposed to a horse field? I was under the impression that they only grow (or mostly anyway) in horse poo, so it would make more sense if such a large fruiting was in a horse field. Anyway, a GreatFind for GreatOne ;-)

Btw did you go at night?

Hey folks thanks for the replies!~

The day before i collected these I was telling a friend about how i never find any more than just 1 or 2 subbs at a time, then the next day i decide to have a look in the field and Boom, the field just went KaBoom with the subbies!~

Hehehe, it was a trip. And i collected them in broad daylight, at a safe pasture of which i basically have permission to be on :grin: well not really, but i'd sure like it to be that way.  :devil:

Anyways, this is a  cow pasture i have frequented most-often for years now, during all months of the year, and i've never witnessed anymore than just one or two occassional subb's throughout the entire field. And the same goes for all the other fields i've frequented.

I am positive, there are zero horses on this land..
-The subbs were in fact found on decomposing cow manure, but they were found also just in the grass, it was as if the large portions of the grassy pasture had been colonized by pan subb mycelium (though the mycelium was not visible) the fruits were scattered everywhere, it was nuts... thousands of them, too many to pick
-Only about 8 Copelandia mushrooms, nothing was growing underneath the trees in the shade, everything was in the open field underneath the sun.
-No Cubensis mushrooms, but i suspect they are out there, probably in other pastures.

90% of the subbs i saw were not growing directly from cow-patties, but instead growing from the manured-enriched ground, in well-trimmed grass (courtesy of the cows munching away at it to make a perfect surface for finding shrooms on).

Thanks for the compliments everyone

This species seems to not have ever been recorded to grow here in Fla, so i might send sum in along with a spore-print to possibly guzman or gartz(?) to have a look at.

Oh and i was very-tempted last night to do a bioassay; I weighed out 2 ounces of the fresh shrooms but i was just too tired to trip last night,
-I figure that once the subbs are dried their potency is very low, and they basically need to be eaten fresh, we'll see..

The weather has been really nice for shrooms lately, i bet the field has twice as many shrooms growing from it now than it did the other day. And probably even more rain and humidity could be on the way for us.

Keep shroomin,
GG

Also, today i was out hunting for some of the mystery lawn-Pan-shrooms, with no luck; but i did find some interesting Agrocybes.
Also, today i was poking around several beds of woodchips, looking for Gymno's, with no luck yet on those either.

Soon though, early/early spring is in the air, almost too early it seems, i've been spotting alot of Columned Stinkhorns popping up along the way, usually a sign of spring.

Keep shroomin,
GG

I've been seeing lots of those growing in the mulch beds around my apartment recently as well. Man, do they stink!

So did you try a bioassay on the subbs yet GG? I'd be very interested to read about how they were when they were dry (in terms of potency), as well as your subjective differences between them and cubes.

Thanks.

Thanks for the bump Nomad  :heartpump:

Megaman, yeah i did a bioassay a couple nights ago and it was good.

I took roughly a quarter ounce of dried subbs, and had a nice time.
-I'm sure it would have been much better if i ate them fresh though.

It was a nice trip.

Thanks GGreatOne. Would you mind describing the trip a little bit? I'm especially interested in your opinion of how a subb trip differs from a cube trip, if it does. Btw you ate the shrooms or you made tea? And approximately for how long were they dry before you took them?

Thank ya.

WOW! I live in Florida as well, and I am new to mushrooms (never tried them yet), and I keep asking people if I can get some and they say I have to wait for spring. So I could go out and find some now? I live on the east coast, does that make a big difference? What kinds should I look for over here? I love your post! thanks.
