The white ring does look cool.It disappears eventually. Here's the other pic that didn't load.I just got a new ,more powerful, supposedly better, computer. It's a piece of shit. It's taken me 3 times to load these damn photos,at about 30 minutes a try. I wish I had my old, slow, wimpy computer that fuckin' WORKED RIGHT.

Mj, and another mycologist think they are either a Stropharia, Hypholoma (naematoloma) or a psilocybe, possibly an unidentified psilocybe. I think they may be psilocybe caerulipes or maybe even p. subaeruginascens which is reported from Asia, but I'm just guessing on this. I suspect they may be active, even though they don't appear to show any bluing. Not all active psilocybes will show bluing. I've collected a few specimens that seem to bruise a faint greenish to greenish-blue at the stem base. There's also another reason why I think they may be magic, but I don't want to say it's definite until I check a few more things out.

They are not Stropharia, possibly Hypholoma but I place my bets on Psilocybe. If you have indeed seen bluing then that would mean an active psilocybe. Is the leading gill edge white?

hi..
i live in NC too. Apex, NC to be exact. right outside of raleigh. ive seen these shrooms before. i mow the grass every now an then to make a couple extra bucks for kb or somethin. one day i noticed that in a pile against a fence there where tons of mushrooms growing out from it.. im guessing the pile consisted of choped up dried up grass and dog shit.. wich is everywhere in the yard. there where litteraly hundreds of them. although having read so much about people eating the "wrong" shrooms. i didnt pick them and ingored them as i saw no blueing. the next week when i mowed the lawn again i saw them and they were fried by the sun.
in other words.. i have no earthly idea what they are.
but just wanted to state that i live in NC too and have seen these mushrooms.

Workman, when the mushrooms reach maturity, they possess brown gills with a white edge.

Monkah, Mitch is right, these grow strictly on hardwood mulch. In some of the pics you may notice some pine straw, but there is decomposing hardwood mulch under the pine straw. They also grow from decomposing hardwood leaves.I would like everyone to note, these mushrooms are hard to pick out. There are several other look-alike LBM's that grow with or near these. Some of 'em are dead ringers, especially if you're just looking at the caps. I have to check out the stalk and the gills on some to be sure.If you'll notice from some of my previously posted pics, there can be a wide variation in the cap color, mainly at different stages of their growth. This makes them even harder to pic out from the other mushrooms.

So, Doo, you think this may be Ps. caerulipes? Hmmm.......
Most of the pictures I've seen of Ps. caerulipes had a somewhat flat cap. Have your Ps. doozii ever expanded to the flat position? Just wondering, cause that's what I do quite often. I wonder.
Well, MJ's site has a good pic of Ps. caerulipes that does not resemble the guides' photos hardly at all. In fact, his pic is more umbonate, like these dooziis you've been finding. MJ's pics are in B&W, although.
Well, I'm all for naming this mushroom after you, my mushroom-fellow! I believe that quite a few other mushroom-fellows will back me on this! You got something here, man.
On another note: I guess they somewhat resemble Ps. subaeruginosa somewhat, but considering the differences in climate, region, preference, etc. , I don't have the power to rule it out, but between you and me, I'm ruling it out. hehe! :)
It could very well be a variation of other common mushrooms, even the commons from other continents, too.
It seems that mycology, in general, has only been very successful in linking the cubensis complex, as far as broad variation from area to area(maybe because Ps. cubensis grows in dung?! :P).
I'm dragging, but hell, I'm quite interested in this species.
Ps. doozii is my suggestion. I'm nuts in the head, though.
Still, Stay cool!-Levi7.

BTW, if it turns out to be inactive, it still is a purple-brown spored mushroom that grows on hardwod mulch. We can definitely call this a Psilocybe, doo!
It would take mycology quite a few years to protest this! Tons of research, tons of moolah, bro!
I'm all for Ps. doozii, as I have mentioned time and time again.
I'm an obsessive/compulsive hunter, huh?!

sorry levi7, it could be a neamatoloma, stropharia (tho probably not), hypholoma, tho theres very little possibility of it being poisonous. theres only one toxic mushroom form he order strophariadae (i hope im not wrong) and thats neamatoloma fasiculare. but as mentioned, it is a mesterious speceis doo has there. Doozii sounds neat

I like the name, too, Mitch!
OK, you're right that it could be Naeomatoloma(Hypholoma), but you know that Naematoloma is a very close relative and if a Naematoloma was found to contain Psilocybin, it would then be considered Psilocybe.
We know about Stropharias' cross-over into Psilocybe.
I know nothing more for argument. I'm only supporting Ps. doozii ! You know what I mean, Voltron?
Stay cool, bro!-Levi7.

wrong?

we had a pile of mulch we bought from a tree cutting company sitting in our front lawn for awhile, maybe a month. it rained several times and eventualy got scatterd all over the yard while we moved it around and used it around trees and bush's.
and along the fence...

me.. im lazy im not going to clean up mulch just mow over it.
so they had plenty of wood mixed in with that dog poo and grass

;P

yes but you said if it grew on hardwood mulch with a purple brown sporeprint, however inactive, would be "definately" a psilocybe. i say false, only on the definative. not the possibility, and in all probability also higly improbable.
youre so optimistic, :)

OK, OK! I said that if it's got a purple-brown spore print, we could definitely CALL this a Psilocybe. I also mentioned that it would take awhile for anyone to prove us wrong.
It has a purple-brown print, so yes, we can CALL it a Psilocybe every single day up to the point that someone does prove us wrong. As for now, it's called Ps. doozii. hehe!
For the sake of the matter, just because it has a purple-brown print, doesn't mean it's a Psilocybe. So, yes, Mitch, you are correct.
Psilocybe doozii. Psilocybe doozii. Psilocybe doozii, dedicated to the finder of the species, Mr. Doo!!!!!!!!!!
Hehe. Stay cool!-Levi7.

Levi7, the caps will flatten out to plane on some specimens. They all may flatten out if nature gives them a chance, but I think dry weather and high heat dries them up before they completely mature. Some even have wavy caps. The reason why I mentioned P.subaeruginascens, is because if I remember correctly, they are described as having a silvery look to the mycelium that is attached to the stalk base. These also have this at times.I may be way off base in regards to the P. subaer. description, because I let my buddy Dioze1 borrow my book and I'm trying to recall it from memory. : )

Monkah, if you have mulch or woodchips in or around your lawn you may have seen these. The mushrooms should be attached to pieces of wood or wood debris if they are the same as these.Just be aware, that as of now, these are unidentified, and while I don't beleive they are poisonous, very little is known, at this point if they have any other effects.

Mitch, these could very possibly be naematoloma, hypholoma, or a psilocybe(they gotta be one of these three). There's also a good chance either way, if they are a psilocybe, that they are active or inactive. The same goes for if they turn out to be a naem. or hypholoma,as some of these species are listed as being active also.
I guess I'm gonna have to find out if they are active or not. : )
