I still think that you would need to get into the bedrock to bring it down.

I was reading a couple engineers talk about it, saying you could hit it with a nuke or bury a small one inside the concrete and it would still stand.

I'm sure a big enough nuke on the waterside would bring it down, but most nuclear weapons today are miniaturized hydrogen bombs made to fit on missiles and in planes and are only a few hundred kilotons.

run a minuteman ICBM against it on the outside and you're not going to do anything other than melt the top few inches of concrete.

ANFO into the stone about 30 meters to the open side of the dam, ANFO is a slow
charge that will cause a shitload of damage to the supporting rock, run about 80 3
inch holes about 6 meters deep, packed with ANFO and you'll weaken the wall enough
that it will start to give under the pressure

That seems feasible. Enough of that on the sides on each side of the dam would fuck shit up. I think you'd have to go deeper than 6 meters though to cause catastrophic failure throughout the dam. it's 660 feet wide at the base.

But is it possible to drill the holes in the hypothetical 24 hour window?

I get what you are saying about where it meets the rock but the wall is 660 feet thick im not sure a an explosion 19 feet in would do shit

ANFO can release a lot of energy, it doesnt just blast away the surface, it does
deep damage to the underlying rock as well, hence the need for the velocity
explosive, ANFO decomposes by detonation because of it's speed, it creates
tremendous shock waves through the rock. a lot of it well below the surface will
be pulverized and as the pressure of the water acts on the rock holding it back it
will stat breaking some of that rock away, the dam it's self will sustain little
damage but the water would bypass it

this is only 50lbs, watch the ground, not the blast

Really you only need to punch a small hole all the way through.  The water pushing through with the force and weight of the lake behind it will basically rip the hole larger and larger very very very very quickly and collapse almost the entire main structure.  Dams work under similar principals as an archway.  If you take one of the stones out of the archway then what its holding above will collapse quickly and take the rest of the arch with it. 

Of course the lower on the dam the better, but even much much higher up the same issues will occur, as long as the hole is a bit under the water line. 

This website seems to think it would be mostly impossible, but I have a hard time believing that because we always seem to overstate how secure or well designed something is only to find it did not handle some big event like we thought.  9/11 is a perfect example of that.  If you had asked the architects after they were built but before 9/11 they would tell you the buildings were designed to not fall from direct plane hits and shit....I do have a little more faith in the hoover dam but not as much as this website:

Yep.  The concrete is stronger than the stone it is attached to which often already has natural fractures you can exploit.

I would kidnap a few scientists who know about and have access to technology pertaining to frequencies and resonance.  its like pushing a person on a swing.  You can push real hard all at once or small amounts of force can be applie at the right moment.  If we were able to set up a series of explosions at a sweet spot and measure the frequency of the vibration we could design a computer program to read the resulting MHz or waves of the dam.  Each explosion would help to build up the waves until the dam starts to shake then eventually it would have a catastrophic failure.  One problem might be the water on one side.  It might dampen the waves.  Like when you're shaving a wheel down on a lathe.  The vibrations get pretty bad but if you wrap a rubber band around it, the band stops, or lowers the amount of vibrations. 

Hypothetically of course I love that damn dam.
