How quickly can you drill through layers of solid concrete separated by solid steel though. I brought that up. I don't think 24 hours is enough even with massive drilling equipment to get enough explosives to where you need them to cause catastrophic failure.

Lake mead already comes up very close to the top of the dam, I'm quite certain a ton of water could flow over the top without coming close to causing it to fail so I also don't believe that blowing up dams further up stream could do it.

I already brought these up on facebook, they brought down dams that were significantly thinner than the hoover dam, Moher dam was only 60 meters at it's base and it took several hits half way down the dam where it was a lot thinner to knock out the upper portion.

You're not going to cause catastrophic failure with that method on the hoover dam.

Why not use modern bombs with the bouncing technique?  That way you can get it under the water with the bigger impact.

I suppose a more modern way would be to drop a torpedo in the water...

I don't think it has to do with them being modern or not, the bombs used in operation chastise that you brought up were almost 10,000 pounds each, and it took several, to get through concrete that was a small percentage of the thickness that the hoover is. I'm sure that as concrete gets thicker you need an exponentially larger amount of explosives to bring it down via that method.

Exponential seems a bit much, but I'm sure it doesn't scale linearly.  Few things do.  I think that, pound for pound, explosives are far more effective these days.  Shaped explosives with multiple stages can do more than a dumb explosive.  But if you stipulate that it must be done by a underground organization rather than a state then they wouldn't have the R&D to do it on their own.

Might be easier to just hack or sabotage operations from the inside.

I'm setting the biggest charge I can get at the lower corner between the cliff and the concrete.  Connections between different materials are always the weakest points.  The damm is strong as fuck but the natural structures are what they are.  They are weaker spots.

Yeah but when they build dams, this is taken into account, isn't it? Aren't they just thicker and thicker the further you go down? I don't know the exact dimensions but I have a feeling 100 feet deep of concrete taken out at the base, even at the intersection between the natural rock and the man made concrete would be substantially more structurally sound than say, 2/3 of the way up.

Geometrically speaking (is that the right word?) the best place you could introduce a fault is in the dead center of the dam. If you can compromise the arch of it, it looses a lot of stability. So out towards the edges isn't exactly helpful in that way, either.

I dunno how you could accomplish it or if it would make a difference but my two best guesses are a massive bomb dead center in close proximity to damn wall at a calculated depth to determine where it would be weak enough to do real damage to the dam structure but not so deep that the concrete is simply too thick to be bothered by it. There's another alternative, tunnel under it and create the worlds biggest artificial sink hole. That would take a gigantic sink hole though. But thanks to simple gravity, unsupported material above a void that is not designed to stand with no support, it wants to crumble and fill in that void.

I actually don't think it'd be that hard to do this if you really had that much at your disposal but I mean.. While yeah it would fuck some shit up, it's really not going to be THAT damn horrible. With all the work, planning and money needed to achieve it, there are much better activities for terrorists to engage in. Most would be far more economical and practical as well. 500 people armed with automatic weapons and body armor, a couple of retrofitted armor plated vehicles and a place like New York, you could do far more damage.

The first thing I told him is that he'd cause much more havoc using all his goons to go around to buffets and spread e coli around every where. Even better would be to focus on the produce at grocery stores. You could easily disrupt a city like that I think.

If you wanna disrupt a city, destroy the electrical grid and poison the water supply. City will be in chaos almost instantly. Living in hurricane land, you can really get a feel for how stupid the average person is, and how they depend on all the modern conveniences like clean water from a tap and electricity. Every time a big hurricane rolls through, it's chaotic to say the least. With the way people act, you'd assume it's the end of the world.
