So Rustifer, Koods and myself were having a light hearted discussion about terrorism.

One thing led to another and we got onto the topic of a terrorist attack on the Hoover dam and how one would pull it off and if it was even possible. I tossed around the idea of flying a plane loaded with explosives into the dam to result in a compromise of the structure. After much debate and research we decided that my idea would fail and end in little to no damage to the overall integrity of the dam.

Then we discussed setting off explosive charges on the inside, possibly in the nearby mountains in an attempt to destabilize the cliffs around it resulting in the dam collapsing under the pressure from the water. Or perhaps setting off a nuclear device inside the structure as'well.. Anyways, we've hit a dead end on a feasible way any organization could pull this off, or if a world war broke out how some other country may attempt to do this.

So, in the spirit of the discussion let's set some parameters.
You are a terrorist organization.
You have tens of thousands of men loyal to your cause.
You have several hundred million dollars to use.
You have access to military grade explosives.
You have 24 hours of uninterrupted access to Hoover Dam and surrounding area.

You DO NOT have nuclear weapons.
(because that is too easy)

The goal is to destroy the Dam, not to simply decommission it.

Also, the goal is to cause near complete catastrophic failure of the dam, you could pretty easily knock a hole in the top part with several tons of well placed explosives, but the goal is to make a 700 foot tall wall of water, not just let some of the water out or take out the hydroelectric plant.

Exactly.

To decommission the Dam would be to easy- but if you could completely destroy it, it would cause environmental, economic and health disasters across the west coast.

You would need to start by getting inside the continental US with your war machine. That would take a colossal amount of effort destroying air defense systems and securing enough space inland that you'd be able to get close enough to it to destroy it- and by the time it was achieved I don't know that you'd want to destroy it as it's such a nice dam you might just decide to keep it for your newly established radical empire. :strokebeard:

The thing is, that you could drop nukes or semi truck loads of conventional explosives down either side of the dam, detonate them, and nothing would happen, it's 660 feet of solid concrete at it's base. You're not going to take it out from the air. Period.

You'd have to drill many holes into specific positions and load them with extremely large amounts of explosives to cause catastrophic failure, I don't think it would be possible with only 24 hours.

Drop Honey BooBoo's mom from a commercial airliner on the dam. Mission accomplished.

Dropping the bomb in the water side of the damn would be better I think. The shock wave would pack a bigger punch through water than air.

Also, are there any more smaller dams up river of it? Blow those out first to help overload the big one. An attack that may not destroy it at normal levels could possibly be catastrophic at higher levels. Maybe time them so the surge of water reaches as the main dam bomb blows to help provide a helping push?

Maybe several of the GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) delivered by a few B2 bombers  could do it... MAYBE. Hit in the right places. But I still really doubt it.

I still don't really think 14 tons of explosives is anywhere near what you'd need to bring it down.

I was reading some engineer say that you couldn't take it down with a nuke the size of what we used in WWII placed in the center of the base.

With military explosives, 24 hours, thousands of people, and money it seems pretty simple. Hire an engineer and demolitions expert and have them drill holes in the dam for strategically placed charges that will cause it to collapse.

In reality I'd imagine that would be pretty hard to pull off as I'd assume the dam has pretty good security, drilling is not quiet, and you'd have to bring a decent amount of stuff to do it (large drills and bits, tools, explosives, etc)
