DVD+R vs DVD-R
    #2292602 - 02/01/04 10:55 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I'm in the market for a burner and I have no idea what the difference is....is one better than the other? I have hte opportunity to get a good drive real cheap but it only supports DVD+R...is this a problem or should I shell out the extra cash for a dual mode model? Thanks.

buy a dual mode. certain dvd readers will only read a certain format. no one knows what standard is going to win out. so, play it safe, and get one that supports both.

It looks like the future belongs to the + format because it is more flexible and has more capabilities for digital video recording.
Anyway, which brand and model is the drive ? Some are sold just as - or just as + but then they can support the other format with just a firmware upgrade.
Btw, buying dual is good idea but i disagree with llamaboy about the readers reading just one format. All readers read + and - and some read the DVD Ram format. Some DVD recorders - although they might record in just one format (- or +) - have the same capabilities as the reader, so they can also read +, - and some can read DVD Ram.

I'd get the dual mode on general principle. but thats just me.

If you got a line on a cheap +, Id say its a pretty safe bet. even if you want another one a year from now, they'll probably be way better and cheaper by then anyway.

media is gonna gost your ass, tho.

yeah, better and cheaper...japan has already introduced a "blue light" laser for dvd recording. basically instead of the 4 gigs on one disk, you get 10 or so. i think DVDR's now use a red laser, as everyone knows blue is a shorter wavelenght, and thus will be able to fit much more onto a single disk. i remember reading this a while ago, not sure if it's hit the US yet
