definitely, but just as switzerland would have a difficult time claiming "neutrality" if it still involved itself in foreign wars, dawkins has a difficult time claiming academic objectiveness while taking potshots over twitter

There seems to be a disturbing PC notion that all viewpoints are deserving of respect.  They are not.  Some demand mockery and condemnation.

definitely agree--not all opinions are equal--if you say something stupid, expect to be shutdown or shutout, because wasting my time arguing with you is detrimental to productive debate

but, if you want to be taken seriously as an academic you should probably refrain from being needlessly offensive for the sake of stirring up controversy--leave that to the shock jocks of the world

the tweet and video do not provide any real critique on either feminism or islam but instead adds to the image of a bitter old man unable to conceal his contempt--and it should come as no surprise to find him being confined more and more to the realm of twitter as the academic world grows tired of his shit

this is why i used the term "treat your opponent with respect" rather than "respect your opponent"

for example, i have no respect for former prime minister stephen harper, but if i wanted to put emotions aside and have a debate with him, i would treat him with respect and expect the same from him

outside of that specific realm of reasoned discussion, don't expect the same treatment--kinda like the difference between a duel and a bar brawl

that way i see it, the intent of posting that video was to stir up controversy, not discussion

i wouldn't call it an attempt to introduce anything new into the discussion--which may have excused the format--because it was just a song making nonsensical comparisons--such as contrasting jihad to the slut walk

the video wasn't chosen for its critique showing the parallels between islam and radical feminism, but as a foray into insult comedy--and i don't know how anyone could expect this to ever lead to reasoned discussion


you are correct tho, in that he is technically an academic--but his behaviour is anathema to an environment most conducive to reasoned discussion--it should not be surprising that he will find himself falling further and further from academic circles

My level of respect for academic circles has just about completely disappeared.  The academics are the most dogmatic bunch of intellectual cowards there is on the planet today.  How they treat heretics is reminiscent of the Catholic Church during the Inquisition.  Egads, a conservative!  Burn him!

I don't think much of the academy.  They are intellectual cowards who brook no dissent.  Safe zones for the precious little snowflakes?  Fuck.  That.  Shit.  Microaggressions?  I can get more than micro you fucking wimps.  You better learn to deal with it because when the Ivy falls from your house walls you are gonna get your ass kicked by the world.  Word to the little babas and their enablers in the academy.  In the real world nobody gives a fuck.

i agree--it's why i went from seeking a phd to being a proud drop out


i understand the point you're making, and i'm mostly in agreement--but, i also am under no illusions (i don't think you are either) that acting in such a way will ever convince someone that their opinion is wrong

normally that doesn't bother me, as i don't get my kicks from convincing people i'm right--but i also recognize that the best way to strengthen my own opinions is to be open to debating them with alternative viewpoints--and in these situations (which can happen outside of the ivory tower), i understand the benefit in ensuring an environment free of hostility

I don't think there is ever any chance of convincing the entrenched.  But I also think it is essential to counter the PC hordes at every turn to expose them as the dogmatic drones that they are.  Evil flourishes when good men do not fight it.
