Cultural Anthropology
    #22788993 -

So, I'm taking cultural anthropology as an elective this semester..

I've done a bit of background research into the subject so that I can look real smart when classes start, and it seems really interesting.
I'm just not sure what to expect..

Has anyone here taken a similar class? How was it?

I took it last semester. Failed it like a fuckin' idiot because I didn't sign up for this website for the textbook where we had to take quizzes until halfway through the semester because I couldn't afford it (shit was like $80). I also skipped about 1/3 of all the classes. What I caught of the class was interesting though, I regret not having taken it more seriously

It really depends on your prof. I took a class similar to this and we spent a lot of time talking about cultural biases and how they shape our view of the world. Like how races are viewed by other cultures, how marriage works, etc.

He kinda wove that into talking about how they evolved over time from religion and spread of ideas

I think it was basically it a bunch of horseshit that wasn't really worth studying from a practical point of view but it was a really interesting class. Super easy too

In my class it was a lot about understanding and describing the customs of different societies and applying our own standards to those behaviors.
How culture and ideas spread to other areas.
Social stratifications.
A huuuuge part about race and ethnicity and how its just a social construct and completely arbitrary.
Sex and gender.
Religion and marriage.

The greater part of the work for that class was just reading, leaving class for 20min and writing a page abot what we observed happening wherever we took our break, and one actual assignment which was an ethnography we had to write about whatever we chose. I chose to observe the behavior of people at my gym; did it like twice and made everything else up.
Easy A.
Learned a lot in that class.

Yep I took it when I got my degree and it was over cultures and their beliefs and shit. Example was this one tribe that sent men to battle and it was a huge honor to be killed in battle. The other examples were types of farming methods and shit used by indigenous tribes (slash and burn method...etc). It was pretty interesting and not hard at all and I found it really interesting. I think it would be a cool career but you would really have to go all the way to even get a job with such a degree (pHd level).

Sounds fun and interesting, I was reading a wiki article about the subject it seems right up my alley
however, its not for a major or anything, just an elective..so the easy As yous guys are saying ya got sounds nice too.

I was looking forward to creative writing this semester but the class didn't get enough students in it and was cancelled like yesterday (which is BS because school starts tuesday literally no time to find a replacement).

Oh well, I probably shouldn't have been taking 17 hours anyways this semester.

I loved cultural anthropology.

U basically learn about various cultures around the world and how their culture functions. Then u analyze the cultures from two perspectives, internally and externally.

Pretty interesting stuff. Other cultures are very different than Western ones by far!
