Re: Pinning jar, but not fully colonized

It's not good that it's pinning in the jar... maybe you had the jar in the light? It should be in complete darkness while colonizing the jar.

Anyway, its not an exact science. If its pinning, take it out. Next time keep it out of the light. Be careful with the pins and all that...

sparkey had the same problem in his adventure his jars stalled so he gave um some light..........they fired up again (cept 1)but started pinning.......so he put them back in the dark and they were fine (had a jump start at birth)......everythings fine......and growing nice!

I thought in the PF tek it said that you want to keep the cakes in the jar until you see pinning, then hold them in there for an extra day or two, then birth.

Also, I definitely know they are in the light, but b/c the tek says to initially keep the jars in the dark then expose them to light as you see the jar begin to colonize substantially.

You should always leave the jars in complete darkness for a solid two weeks at the least to colonize. After those two weeks, check on the jars every couple of days until the cake is completely colonized. The reason the PF tek recommends letting the cake stay in the jar for a couple days after full colonization is so that it builds a stronger network of mycillium and will be more resistant to bacteria once out of the jar. However, if a cake is exposed to light and does start pinning, you can take it out of the jar, singe the rest of the exposed substrate, and then place it in your incubator.

To singe the uncolonized part, do you mean using a lighter or the alcohol flame tek, I guess?

(T.C.'s)the cased jar was 85% when birthed and after a sm. bout with green mold......there doing the best.sparkey doesnt know shit.....cause he's real wet behind the ears..........just tellin ya what he told me for what its worth  .......when i asked ...i was told to leave um till there 100%............
