Tips for hunting mushrooms in Manawatu

Hello all, I am very interested in psychedelics and wish to EXPAND my conscious. I would really appreciate if someone could provide with some material in regards to this beautiful fungus. I would like to know when I should look and what areas I should be looking. I live in the lower North Island (Manawatu). I am not asking for specific spots but more or less a rough idea e.g Coastal Pine forest etc. I am aware that I have not specified what species of mushroom but my current knowledge limits detail. Any help of any kind would be very greatly appreciated.

Well, first off, you should know that you're going to have to wait until next year to pick your own! The fungus fruits (that is to say, mushrooms grow) only in autumn/winter, typically April - August.

Secondly, there's a lot of information out there on the internet, so I won't write a lot. In NZ, there aren't very many species that you're after - you're going to most likely want to hunt one specific mushroom called P. subaeruginosa. This is a small, brown mushroom which grows in wood chips. The best stuff is that sort of mulched twigs etc that you see in gardens. Don't waste your time looking in bark chips (the brown stuff) or on rotten trees in the bush. You're going to be doing most of your hunting in plain ol' white mulched wood.

Typically, the best place to find patches of this sort of wood are in urban areas. I've had a lot of luck in cemeteries, schools, parks, city planters, churches, etc etc. Anywhere with a tended garden, really.

There are a few other species that you may or may be on the lookout for: P. Aucklandii, P. subsecotioides, P. weraroa; but it's best to start off with the subaeruginosa, and they'll probably make up 95%+ of your finds.

I consider this to be a pretty good source. It's written for Victoria, Australia, but a lot of it is still applicable. It might have some photos of subs growing wildly in the forest - in my experience, this is very rare in NZ (I've seen them a couple of times.) Best to stick to urban environments.

Also, each season, there's typically a thread on NZ finds on this forum. Search through some old threads to find photos that other people have posted, to get a feel for where you're likely to find the mushrooms. Here's this years:

Take your time to do research. Mushroom hunting happens in two distinct stages: researching the hell out of it, so you've got an idea of where to look, and then putting hours and hours into searching. Seeing as you've got until early-ish next year until it starts up again, that's a lot of book reading!

One final word of advice: never eat a mushroom without being 100% sure of what it is. Seriously, if you get it wrong you could die a horrible, horrible death. Take lots of photos of the mushrooms you find, and then post those photos in this forum for an identifcation. People are extremely helpful, and extremely good at what they do.
