Planning to buy an (HPS) light tomorrow but I need some help before then
    #22640017 -

I've cultivated plants for years now "on and off" but this year was the first I really started focusing on indoor lighting for plants. All years past I was able to start things in a window or out in real sun but I'm trying to grow good Bud now so that complicates things a little more.

I've been working solely with 6500K flouros for Veg and 3000K flouros for fruiting. I have all my indoor "or what I call my sad plants" under a 6500K flouro so I can watch them and treat whatever issue pops up then I usually take them back outside.

Anyways "Back on the subject" I don't have a lot of cash but I have enough to purchase a (HPS) light for fruiting and I'm planning to buy one tomorrow.

I was hoping you guys could help me figure out what the best thing to do is without a bunch of numbers and shit that seems to confuse me:facepalm:.

I'm hoping to flower 3 plants at least under 1 (HPS) light so I need to know what I'll need to do that with.

1. What watt do I need?

2. What size bulb will do the job?

3. And What type of fixture would work best?

Room size is a big factor here.
2x2  250 watt
3x3  400 watt
4x4  600 watt
5x5  1000 watt

That's just a safe base line to go by, not a rule.
Keep in mind you need a good exhaust fan, plants need fresh air just as much as they do light.  You want to change out the air in the room at a rate of at least 2x the total cubic feet of the room per minute.

I have very much enjoyed the output from a 600 watt hps in the past. Put your "sad plants" under the 600 watt hps for vegging. It's not as ideal for vegging as mh, but it's a lot better then floros and will make your plants healthier and bulkier, ready for some phat ass nugs. HPS also makes more compact internodes on the plant, Whenever I vegged with hps I had solid 20+ inch long nugs the who way up to the top.

An electronic ballast is more expensive and can switch between hps and mh. Magnetic ballast these days can also switch between hps and mh, they are bigger but half the price.

In  Canada I think grow equipment is going to go on sale in a serious way soon. Marijuana is supposed to be legalized right away, and like booze, most people are not going to want to drink moonshine when the local LC is right there

I started with 400 watt and graduated to 600 dimmable ballast. 250 will work, but the higher the wattage the more dense everything will be and the deeper it will penetrate. 250 will leave you with a lot of fluffy popcorn underneath the top canopy. I like the dimmable ballast because I can lower the wattage for smaller/younger plants, then amp it up when I switched to 12/12.

I highly recommend getting a hood with a glass shield and a gasket as you'll need to ventilate the heat (always with carbon filtration). I had a hood with glass but no gasket and my neighbor busted me out... turns out it was pulling through the gaps around the glass and turned into quite the pain in the ads taping all of these seams every time I changed the bulb. Luckily he was cool about it.

I ran both of these lights in a 3x3 room and was plenty of space to grow 4 nice sized plants 3 times a year. Grats on making the upgrade!

Hey, you can always do what I did and build an LED grow light
This is my "proof of concept" panel. Basically a test to see how well it works before I invest in a much better build.

I am awaiting a package of resistors before I can finish it, but right now it's incredibly bright. It can light up my entire kitchen and living room! Runs at about 45w right now but once completed it will run at 90w. It runs off a 12v power supply. Once completed it will output 6 of the optimal wavelengths and I am going to supplement a 6500k cfl in the room to help with missing wavelengths that aren't as important.

[edit] oh yeah, the price was about $30 total. The most expensive part will be the driver which you probably already have laying around your home.

Hey Dude could you link me to some info that will show me how to do this for myself?

I don't know of any information related to this. I drew up a circuit after researching wavelengths and put it to the old soldering iron!

If you or any of the other guys really want I can write up a tutorial with step by step directions or something.

When you fire that baby up and get some control plants growing nicely, I might give that a try. This sounds very ideal, I can have my plants growing anywhere I want, and cheap to run!

I use a 600w for 3 flowering plants in a 5'x5' tent. I used a Lumatek E-ballast, Lumatek bulb, and a hood with tempered glass. Fluros used for vegging.

I average a pound off three plants, vegged for a month and a half from rooted clones. Flowered for 9 weeks. Depending on genetics. I got 13oz off a Pineapple Express this way.
