Why arnt diesels more popular

Like apart from power (Which has now been pretty much negated by turbos) theres like no downsides. And so many positives. For a commuter with no need for any sort of sporty use, it would be so much better for the average commuter no?

It hasn't been negated by turbo. You are comparing apples to oranges. Both have their place and neither is king of either place. They are opposite ends of the spectrum. This is where your answer lies. The applications/people that best benefit from diesel are simply out numbered by those who benefit from the usual gasoline engine.

That is really all I'm going to say on the subject at this time. As much as I want to sit here and "school you", I just don't have the patience for it right now.

Diesels are pretty popular where I live (Netherlands). Above a certain yearly milage its cheaper to use diesel for fuel :shrug:

In cars or trucks?

For starters there are like 3 diesel mechanics in any given 40 mile radius.

They cost an arm and a leg to repair assuming you can find an honest diesel mechanic.

They are extremely high maintenance motors with a million electronic components and sensors that can go wrong.

They aren't that much different then regular gassers. Higher compression, glow plugs instead of spark plugs, higher fuel pressure and a block heater.

Very efficient and most Americans see them as stinky and loud. New diesels are on point though.

Diesel is a lot harder to start in cold weather which could sway some.

I would buy a diesel with 200,000 miles before id buy a gas car with 100,000.

If you are talking about spending $10,000 or more on a newer duramax or cummins I agree but you wouldn't want a diesel in the price range I buy them in (max 5k).

Unless you like 2003 to 2004 6.0L diesels that idle rough and take 8 seconds of cranking to start. That's about all you can get at the dealer auction in a diesel truck for under 5k.

the key is to either get old diesels, or really new ones.  The ones after around the mid to late 90's, at least for fords were crap.  you really jsut have to research the motor before u buy to get a good idea.  I just know on the ford truck engines people loved the old diesel got great gas milage ran good ect, then the new motor came out and people hated it.


the newer gas motors will most likely rival diesels in longevity now, the tolerances are much better and the use of higher quality oils, filters, ect means they should last a really long time if maintained right.

Diesels last longer, more fuel efficient, turbos improve the power.. no it doesnt make them the same but it really helps. Like I cant find any reason why the average person would need a petrol engine if they dont care about power. In all other ways it would be cheaper and more simpler to run.


So please if you could just get over your horrible condescending obsession in hating me that would be nice shroomism. Every fucking post, getting old now dont you think.

I hate you as well, but will try to address the question.

Diesels are actually very popular in Europe and asia.  Diesel trucks are also becoming increasingly prolific in that country you hate, the U.S..  In the U.S., people may be more apprehensive about buying a diesel car due to the increased price ov fuel, nostalgia, and the negative reception ov bad diesel cars in the late 70s and 80s(the time period which only Mercedes really did diesel cars right). 

On the first point, the higher premium for diesel in the u.s.( i cannot speak for other countries) offsets the increased fuel mileage compared to vehicles which run on 87 octane(ron/mon).  This is a scam since diesel used to be cheaper and there's still no good reason why it, or premium petrol for that matter, should carry such a high cost differential over low octane petrol.

In the u.s., diesels are generally seen as industrial engines for people who need to tow shit and stuff.  Although they're far more refined, powerful, and clean running than they used to be, it will be hard for the united statesians to shake this perception.  Volkswagen's recent dieselgate jawn will also be impactful towards this negative perception ov diesels.

Personally, i'm not big on diesels.  I recognize their advantages ov course, but i strongly prefer the sounds and powerbands ov petrol engines.  I've had a diesel before which turned out to be the most unreliable turd i've ever owned(i still kind ov liked it though), but i'm not going to fault diesels in general over that.  I'm just not a huge fan.  If i had a big ol' truck, which i have no need for like most big ol' truck owners, i'd prefer a big block.

It's mostly because of policies that make diesels relatively unattractive in many countries. In countries where these policies are not in place, diesel is really popular. A good example is France, where most cars are diesel cars.

Especially these days with well functioning overboost turbos that also provide usable torque at low revs, diesels are a joy to drive. High performance diesels are actually competitive with petrol cars while maintaining a fuel economy advantage over petrol. Most of the sentiment in this thread seems to be based on now antiquated technology. Modern diesels are completely on par with petrol engines in virtually all respects.
