Rocket sighting in Sacramento, Ca??

Anyone in Cali see or know anything about a rocket launch tonight. I saw this what appears to be a rocket going up and up and 6pm PMT. It was going up not coming down and you can see the cloud plumeleft behind. It kept going until you couldn't see it anymore. Looked in the news and even called local media and they were getting hundreds of reports but didn't know either.

The Taurid meteor shower is going on this week, including fireballs. I would bet that's what you saw.

that's unlikely to be a meteor, if the sky is overcast, scattered clouds, it's
possible but as it is in the photo it doesnt look like one

NO way it was a meteor. This left a mushroom cloud after about 10 seconds of watching it. Continued to streak through the atmosphere for a while leaving a trail for a little while. It was bright as hell and the sun set opposite side so what was illuminating it if it was a meteor?

naturekid just sent me a panicked message about this. He saw it in southern Utah.

There are videos on twitter starting to be posted.

Looks like a failed rocket launch

It was crazy and NOT a meteor or a comet.
I saw videos of it from south-cal, photos from Salt Lake City and everywhere inbetween.
I'll post photos and links to videos.

Probably not inland. When you fire a rocket to an altitude of 100 miles you can see it from 400 miles away

It was a sounding rocket. They use it to test air currents in the upper atmosphere.

It was still crazy to watch, as an actual meteor shower has happening at the same time.
Really threw me for a loop and I thought the aliens had finally come to take me away.
