I saw it over Stanislaus county. It appeared to be being illuminated from the airport and looked perhaps like a jet with excessive exhaust. towards the period it went out of sight the exhaust was becoming intermittent and I worried it was a jet having engine problems.
I considered that it might be a rocket, but i don't know that they launch large rockets anywhere near hear and it would be on a ballistic trajectory. If it was a space launch having control problems I guess it could have made it past a heck of a lot of places.

Damn; now I want to hear this message.
Side note; I didn't realize that large rocket motors like that looked like fucking gazillion candle power spotlights at night.
You didn't see anything at all like this last night; it was visible for a couple hundred miles by everybody looking in that direction.

It was so visible because the very fine mist of exhaust was illuminated by sunlight at the altitude that the rocket was flying

navy is claiming it. alllllegidally
http://ktla.com/2015/11/07/witnesses-across-socal-report-seeing-unexplained-light-in-night-sky/
Witnesses from Southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area on Saturday evening said they saw an unexplained moving light in the night sky that was reportedly an unarmed missile test-fired by the U.S. Navy.
A viewer's photo shows the mysterious light in the sky above Disneyland in Anaheim on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015. A viewer’s photo shows the mysterious light in the sky above Disneyland in Anaheim on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015. “Light seen in OC sky was confirmed through JWA tower to be a Naval test fire off the coast,” the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said on Twitter, referring to John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana.
A Navy spokesman told the San Diego Union-Tribune that the luminous object was an unarmed Trident missile that was test-fired from a submarine off the coast of Southern California.
Cmdr. Ryan Perry, of the Navy’s Third Fleet, said the Trident II (D5) was launched as scheduled by an Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine in the Pacific Test Range, the Union-Tribune reported.
“Each test activity provides valuable information about our systems, thus contributing to assurance in our capabilities,” Perry said in a statement released to the newspaper.
Hundreds of residents reported seeing the bright phenomenon in Anaheim, Temecula, Rancho Palos Verdes and Santa Monica.
Several speculated that the object may have been a missile or rocket. Others suggested it was a comet or other celestial occurrence.
A spokeswoman for Vandenberg Air Force Base, in Santa Barbara County, said the facility did not launch a rocket on Saturday.
Some initial reports attributed the incident to remnants of the Taurid Meteor Shower.
According to AccuWeather, cosmic fireballs were expected to occasionally light up the sky as the meteor shower peaked into next week.
“Every year, the Earth passes through a stream left by Comet Encke, producing the Taurid Meteor Shower,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Dave Samuhel said. “This shower is notorious for producing fireballs, and there are signs that this could be a year of enhanced activity.”

So if it was only LAX, and I know there's no reason to think that it was but I hope a lot more information surfaces in the next few days, then I'm going to continue to think there was a malfunction.
It makes no sense to me to conduct an unannounced ballistic test over so much of california, or indeed fly any ballistic missile over california. A couple weeks ago we tested a minuteman, but we flew it over the pacific.
This was some distance east of me when it flew over, viewed from a populated area of Stanislaus county. How far east depends on the altitude at the time but given the apparent point or origin it still seems likely it flew over population centers. Why do this on purpose?

This came to mind after reading the thread title. I didn't look any further than this article. I'll just wait for any future reports of foreign warships milling around in the pacific.
