Both this Santa Cruz video and Coaster's video were excruciating to watch. Two observations:

1) I hate the way American women (in some parts of the country - especially CA) talk. It is essentially an adolescent way of speaking. Using the word "like" as a crutch might be appropriate for a 15 year old girl, but when it comes out of the mouth of a 30+ year old woman it is painful to hear. I have noticed that California women in particular seem caught in a permanent adolescence. Whereas in Europe it is fashionable to mature and demonstrate your burgeoning adulthood at an early age, in America (particularly the west coast) it is equally fashionable to prolong adolesence - or adoloescent behavior - well into middle age.

2) I don't know if Americans really are stupider than people in the rest of the world, but it sure seems that way. Granted, Miss South Carolina didn't get onto that stage for her brains. But I seriously doubt that a beauty contestant from any country in the Commonwealth or Europe would be rendered inarticulate by such a simple question. I think it is more an issue of education than intelligence. I have noticed that the vocabulary of the typical American is FAR less developed than the vocabulary of people from Commonwealth countries. Even "educated" Americans often don't speak or write very well. And the irritating thing is that in America, there is no shame attached to speaking inarticulately. If anything, it is shameful to write and speak well, or at least comes off as somewhat odd.
