Skepdic.com has a neat section called "Suburban Myths". Not urban legends, but common misconceptions that people have about all kinds of things.
How many did you think were true?

Theres a relation between a kennedy last name and my last name. Everyone on my dad's side is dead. Me and my brother are the only 2 left alive. Theres my uncle, but hes a bastard, and probably deserves death, but things have their funny way, and he is probably stealing money from your piggy bank right now. They didnt roll their dice too well

Damn...good link..I thought the following were true:
Myth 24. You can raise your I.Q., SAT score, and dissolve brain tumors by listening to Mozart. (I never heard about the brain tumor part though)
Myth 26. More ships and aircraft have vanished without a trace in the waters between Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico than anywhere else of equal area.
Myth 31. Crimes, mental illness, suicides, and emergency room visits increase when there is a full moon. (Now I REALLY think this one has some truth to it--I know people who work in a hospital, who can testify to it.)
Myth 36. Lemmings commit mass suicide.*
Myth 60. You should drink eight glasses of water a day for good health.* One study, however, does seem to have good evidence that drinking five glasses a day is better than drinking two or fewer with respect to fatal coronary heart disease. (I liked this one the most, I'm glad I read it)
How are Urban Legends different from Suburban Myths?

I read down to 37 but I want to go back to Number 4:
"Evolution is just a theory. Creationism is a theory, too. To be fair to our children, we should teach them both."
We really need to discuss what a theory is and what a theory isn't. Imprecise word usage causes a lot of problems. I did see a couple where I disagree with the way the item was phrased but I don't think I saw any that I wholeheartedly disagreed with.
The article mentions the word theory over and over again without a single reference that I could find to what a theory actually is.
Without a highly defined definition one could equivocate till the cows come home without making a bit of sense. It is also possible to deceive people that way.

Funny you should mention that...

"How are Urban Legends different from Suburban Myths? "
Well, personally, I'd say suburban myths are just a certain kind of urban legend, but I think they're making the distinction, saying that urban legends are actually stories (like the hook on the car door handle story).

quite so
in science a theory is a like a propposed explanation that is still conjecture.
now many get that confused with law, which is proven in the mathematical sense. it has been proven over and over and nothing has ever "proven" it incorrect.
-------------------- Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

and some arent things that have been doing rounds they just seem to have made them up so they can so no no no thats not true. They could do with putting smoking hemp seeds makes you sterile, that just pisses me off no end. Ima get flame so ill state some that arent true: 40 subliminal messaging does not work, so they banned if for the fun of it I suppose? 47 erm theres quite a few people who have conviniently contracted autism after the MMR jab 54 erm nope 57 erm nope 60 how does that make sense? 63 erm you cant say, why dont they just have god exists as a myth ffs 64 wot its the other way around Half the myths on there seem to have no basis whatsoever or a silly argument for their reasoning, sorry to whine but its just bloody annoying.

If you're skeptical, try reading the articles they link to. For instance, the alcohol one doesn't state that alcohol doesn't necessarily have health benefits, just that the benefits may be insignificant. The autism due to immunization has no evidence supporting the idea that the immunization caused it. Did you read the link they provided? Obviously not. "40 subliminal messaging does not work, so they banned if for the fun of it I suppose?" No, they banned it because they were stupid, and misinformed. For #57 they aren't claiming that water doesn't doesn't run down the drain in the opposite direction, they're claiming that it's not because of the Coriolus effect. Again, actually reading the link they provided would have saved you from looking like an idiot. The eight glasses of water a day thing? Well, read the link they providedhttp://www.detnews.com/2002/health/0208/20/a05-566143.htm Men and women do have the same number of ribs, no matter what you believe. A little teeny bit of research will show you this. Hey, you hardly even have to do any research, turns out they provided a link! READ THE LINKS THEY PROVIDE IF YOU WANT INFORMATION BACKING IT UP. Ok?

Yes exactly
Something often overlooked by the people who think we have different numbers of ribs (usually in support of "Adam and Eve") is that you can completely regrow a rib if it is removed. It's one of the only organs in the body with this ability to completely regrow. If you remove one of your ribs (the WHOLE thing!) it will grow back in a month or so.

Yeah, nice to know if I ever lose a rib somewhere. Perhaps when I'm drunk?

Actually, I looked it up, and apparently you need to have certain bits of tissue remaining for it to happen, but it's apparently possible.

Yeah, there's a sheath of tissue surrounding each rib, and it needs to stay as it is what grows the rib back.
I meant just the bone itself, sorry :P
