When I used half pint and pint jars, I mixed it 2 to 1 birdseed to verm. this worked nicely. when I do quarts, I only throw in a little verm to absorb excess moisture.

1 handful of birdseed to a mouthload of vermiculite. The optimal amount isn't much faster than just some random amount. You'll learn this as you progress with your experiments.
