Pretty nice. Doesn't really look like an amateur hack job.

Only critique I can really give it is it looks simplistic. Not necessarily a bad thing.

I wish I could be a precious stone miner. Or whatever the term is.

Thanks all! I'm a miner, lapidary artist, and I took on jewelry earlier this year. I'm trying out a few new designs and getting a feel for what people think of them. I didn't mine this material, but I did shape, polish, and set. I sell in Tucson during the February gem shows. I'm not sure which show I'm doing this year yet but signed up for 22nd st. I'm getting used to my soldering techniques again before I start setting the aquamarines I dug this summer in Colorado. As far as price, the pietersite is some pricey shit. I'm wanting $180-$200 for this piece, which is about average for my pieces.

Yeah that's the biggest issue I have with the flames. They catch on blankets and clothing, sometimes pulling the clasp loose and almost breaking the chain. It's cool though I wore one mining and all during burning man, and the clasp hasn't actually broken yet. Ya gotta be extra careful if you're gonna wear flames around your neck.

looks good, id like to suggest something for future work or at least to try once.  instead of the bear claw type gem holder, switch it up a little bit and encase the gem more.  I feel like sometimes there could be more metal coming around the gem like the gem is sticking out awkwardly.  and when u use more metal obviously you'd want to put some kind of design to it

maybe also you could start adding small gems around the big gem as well for certain pieces.  Hell maybe even make your bear claws out of a gem or something or just put a really tiny gem at the end of the claw somewhere.

just throwing ideas out there

Thanks for the advice. You're describing a bezel setting, which I'm just not fond of and don't enjoy making either. Bezel settings are also usually used for more common stones like jaspers and agates. I'll probably do a full line a bezel settings before the shows but I really don't like them. Prong settings are considered more elegant, and usually reserved for the fancier gems. Something about prongs just get me going. I'm creating my niche in the jewelry business as well which will not include bezels. Don't like to toot my own cock, but I'm known as one of the best cabochon artists in the world especially with obsidian, and bezels are honestly a few steps lower than where I'm already at. I also will not use glue(except for intarsia obsidian Sherlock pipes)and a lot of your ideas require using it. There's still a shit ton I need to learn but some jewelers are content with setting their stones in factory made bezels. While I could get a lot of product on the shelf that way, it's just not me.

honestly that rubs me the wrong way a "best artist in the world" wouldn't be seeking critique's on their wares on the shroomery:lol:

you always try to pass off being lazy for different reasons like 'personal preference' whenever you get critique'd.  last time it was the fact that you didn't even bother to polish your metal, now its because bezels aren't as elegant?  go look at most fancy jewelry, even the shit from 100's of years ago made for kings n shit.  Its not about what you want, its about what others want.  There are different groups of people, the question is who do you really want to aim for.

high class fancy shit is time consuming, highly detailed, hard work, basically all the shit you don't like doing. Till you get the lazy mindset out of your head you'll never reach your true potential.  You are basically finding nice gems and trying to let them do all the work for you.  That might work at the fair or trade shows but if you want to make real money and hit the higher class for their cash then its all the shit you hate doing that's going to get you there.  If you hate doing it, that means its hard work, if its hard, then not many people are doing it, so you should focus all your attention doing shit you hate to get good at it.  All your pieces look very similar at least the ones ive seen, which means you aren't trying to progress and build bigger and better things.  Fine details is what you should be working on.  Engraving/carving/ect. or even just doing to the bezel what you do to the outside of the piece.  which requires more metal.  If you don't have a magnifying glass and a bunch of tiny little tools that garden gnomes would use then your not putting enough effort into it.

sorry if you think im being hard on you but like I said the way you come off rubbed me the wrong way when you say your one of the best in the world, even if its only for one particular area.  I feel like your one of those people that needs a kick in the ass to get motivated.

Well that's fine and all but I'm not an engraver. I do polish my stuff now that I have an actual polishing unit. Engraving is an art I have no interest in and usually doesn't fall in the jewelry category. Jewelry looks to busy when engraved. I do make bezels but just don't like anything about them. As far as my reputation goes, it's for my cabs and material, not my jewelry skills which I'm still a bit self conscious about. I have my designs in my head and don't want to make other's designs. An artist makes what he or she loves, not what someone is forcing them to do for extortion, payment, or fame. I do what I like to do and if other people like it then fuck yeah! If not then that's understandable, not here to please everyone. Thanks for the critique though. It helps me work through why I do the things the way I do them.
