Blacklighting for Scorpions!
    #22239178 - 09/14/15 11:18 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I live in a pretty rural area and not too long ago I found my cat playing with a scorpion. So I got a black light for $10 and it has been the best money I've ever spent. Scorpions glow bright green in a black light so I can shine it at night and they stick out. I found like 20-30 of them, and like several different kinds. There were a ton peeking out of holes and they would run backwards into them when you got close. I highly recommend that people who live in southern areas buy a black light.

I kinda doubt there are many scorpions around my area. Literally the only scorpion I've ever seen alive are ones in pet shops. Never seen one in the wild, and I was the kinda kid always exploring looking for critters. Have never even seen a dead one in the wild.

Not all scorpions are deadly/dangerous or even close to it. A lot are just mildly painful to get stung by.

Also apparently this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arizona_bark_scorpion is the most venomous scorpion in the US (minus pets). Which while it would suck to get stung by, an average healthy adult wouldn't really need to go to a hospital for.

And apparently there's people out there who get stung on purpose.

Yup, living in AZ I constantly see people with black lights out hunting. In my apartment complex we have been getting tons of scorpions indoors due to the monsoons. They come indoors when the ground is underwater. No lie, between me and the roommates we have killed about 6 scorpions in our shower this week alone.

I dislike them a lot. One was on my pillow one time and in the night I rolled my head on top of it. It stung the living fuck out of the inside of my ear. It was swollen for like 2 days lol.

az with scorpions can be a royal pain in the ass.

from them fuckers always popping up, to having to keep your shoes upside down. constantly checking them everytime you put them on.

fuck that noise... glad i dont reside there anymore.

I'd take scorpions over cockroaches any day. We have tons of fucking cockroaches. At the right times of the year you can see them flying by the street lights at night in skin crawling inducing numbers.

Scorpions can't fly at you if you try to kill them. Plus other than getting stung, I'm not really afraid of them. I'd file them the same as spiders and I'm only "afraid" of spiders when they're physically on me, and it's only because I don't want to get bit.

I have a crippling phobia of roaches  besides bites/stings are pretty rare. I've never once been bitten by a spider and I've had to kill hundreds of them just in the past 5-10 years alone. Lots with my bare hands because they're in a position where nothing else will work effectively.

Well I live in So Cal and have only seen maybe 10-15 scorpions in my life before tonight, tonight I saw 20-30....they're just sneaky so you will usually never see them without a black light.

Just some snow a couple months a year.

Scorpions arent that bad most species here arent much different from a bee sting. The most venemous species in the US is the Arizona Bark Scorpion, and those rarely cause deaths in healthy adults. Its the rattlesnakes that you need to watch out for!!

Sounds boring as fuck. Where's your sense of adventure. Scorpions are nothing compared to what's down in the tropics. You wanna talk about trippy insects and dangerous poisons and diseases! Meanwhile Canada boy is drinking hot chocolate on his lazy boy watching the snow fall. Screw that shit, give me something badass, like scorpions in my bed!

I live in phoenix and have a few (well more then a few) species of scorpion here.  However the 2 common ones are giant desert hairy and then the bark scorpion which is pretty small and pretty venomous.

I rarely see em though.  If you live near the edge of town where there is a lot of undeveloped land around you then you will probably see them here and there, or a lot if you blacklight around your yard at night.  But generally they hide so well that you usually never notice that 50 of them are within 100 feet of you at any given time down here.

Most insecticides that get sprayed by complexes for pest control also stop scorpions so as long as your spraying is semi regular (once a year or so) they shouldnt ever be an issue inside your house.  I've never once found one inside, only outside.  I did however find, on multiple occasions, some big ass camel spiders inside my house.  Them suckers are mean, mean looking, and have big ass fangs they rear up at you if you piss em off.  I bet their bite hurts like all hell.  They are pretty 'shy' though so unless you discover one and purposely piss it off, they generally just run like the wind to get away from you.

My kids go scorpion hunting with their grandparents at their house on weekends sometimes with portable black lights.  They have a backyard that behind it is a canal and service road so they get 'extra wildlife'.

Those are all normal spider bites.  Camel spiders are non-venomous.
