I'm surprised that there isn't much written about allergies here. I mean, that's probably a good thing, but for those of us who have problems with allergies, this could be a place where we could share are experiences with various types of treatment and so on.
At the moment, full blown ragweed season is ongoing. That shit is like some kind of biological weapon, you can't destroy it. If you dare to try, you will only help spread its pollen even more. Even chemically speaking, it isn't easy to destroy it, you need strong herbicides, which brings additional problems for the environment obviously. Cutting and burning it also doesn't work. If you cut it, it regrows in no time. If you burn it, once again, you help spread pollen through the rising hot air.
Quote:
There is evidence that mechanical and chemical control methods are actually no more effective in the long run than leaving the weed in place.
[Lewis, Alan J. (1973). "Ragweed Control Techniques: Effect on Old-Field Plant Populations". Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club 100 (6): 333–8.]

Anyway, regardless of the allergen which affects you, how do you deal with the symptoms? I'm currently on desloratadine, but after a few years, it almost isn't even working for me anymore, so I'm looking for alternatives.

I moved to a different climate and I don't get them anymore. I had really bad rhinitis from grass and ragweed. I lived on medications from May-July every year. Now I haven't had allergies for 3 seasons. I discovered I actually have a singing voice!
Also, allergy med fact. Claritin doesn't stop allergies. It prevents them. If you are having allergies and have histamines in your body the Claritin won't get rid of it, it only prevents new ones from being released.

I had my first allergic reaction some 5-6 years ago. The first year I didn't realize what was going on, I just thought it was some sort of cold. The next year, the same reaction, so I bought some OTC medication based on loratadine (10 mg). That just barely worked, so the next year I went to see my doctor and she prescribed me fexofenadine which was ok, but was less effective the year after that, so I got desloratadine (5 mg), which interestingly worked for me better than loratadine (well, until now).
Has anyone tried nasal filters? I got my hopes up when I saw that something like that exists, but ironically this year my eyes were hit even worse than my nose. I guess I should just get a scuba diving mask.
I find it interesting that fungi could help control ragweed. More info about that here and here.

Got to a point where I had hey fever permanently and no medicine worked, I had surgery, polyps removed and nose straightened. Now it's seasonal again and some pills work. Nasal sprays worked after surgery too, I just forget to use them. I spent 2 season in bed because I did not want to buy any products, it was not worth it.

Slept pretty well last night.
Took my herbs about 2 hours before bed instead of right before (tinospora extract and quercetin)
also I didn't pull my sheet over the bed and just let it stay messy the whole day (seeing if this works http://www.theloop.ca/why-you-should-never-make-your-bed/)
also managed to get 3 intense work outs in this week.
It seems like once every 1 - 1.5 weeks (or more) I get in one solid night of sleep and then the next nights tend to be somewhat shitty.
