Perlite Query
    #2213720 - 01/01/04 06:23 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

Afoaf is using perlite to humidify his terrarium. He was looking up some information on perlite, and found that some people are worried about bacteria and such developing. The cakes are already placed on the perlite. Is there anything he can do at this point do make sure the contamination rate is at the minimum?

Tell him not to place the cakes directly on the perlite. Set them on the Jar lids or a piece of Foil. Though fully colonized cakes are pretty tuff when it comes to contams its better to be safe then sorry. Also placing the cakes on something will also prevent the cakes from absorbing to much water from the perlite.

mix some peroxide with the perlite/water,that will help control any contams.

as long as the cake is healthy(water and nutrs concentration) contams r not really a prob.

nevertheless in my personal opinion putting cakes directly on perlite is a little bit messy.

I choose to put it on some plate with wet verm. this I think reduces the contam rate because the cake by touching the perlite could leave there water drips(or whatever) with suficient nutrs to iniciate bacterial lifeforms.

hope I helped you
