Maxtor 120gig HD only reading as 33gig on my computer WHY?

i just got this new 120gig hd, and windows xp only reads 33 gigs of it, i know theres ways to get all of it out of it or maybe i need to upgrade or something im not quite sure i used to know all this shit, now im just confused, anyone wanna point me in a direction? its set as slave

try formatting it. use NTFS

My guess is either need to repartition with large file support (if using Micro$ofts fdisk) or update your BIOS if your computer is older.

Different for each computer. Go to the web site of whoever made your computer (motherboard) and start digging. Usually you download a file and run it, which creates a floppy disk that you then boot which then updates the BIOS for you.

On some maxtor HD's I have noticed that there is a jumper setting to choose how you big you want to make your drive. This is handy if you want to run a software RAID but useless if you want lots of space. The jumpers are located next to the IDE cable, and there usually is a reference guide on the top of the HD. Check it out, I once thougt I only had a 1gig but it turned out to be a 2.5 because the jumper was wrong.

you have to have Windows XP SP1 or update your bios or install a PCI ATA controller card they can handle 48-bit addressing or install Intel Application Accelerator.

Absolutely incorrect.

I had a 120 gig Maxtor and XP before SP1. It worked just fine.

luvdemshrooms is correct. 120gb drives are not over the 137gb threshold, and should operate without 48bit support. I would suggest going to http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/index.htm , and downloading maxblast 3 for windows, then use it to format your drive.
