Do you guys extract your own salvia D?
    #2200385 - 12/25/03 12:04 AM (20 years, 3 months ago)

I'm about to buy a live sally d plant, its about 20cm in height, just wondering if its it worth buying one when talking about its growth rate?
How hard is it to extract it succesfully for smoking?
What methods and techniques have worked the best for you?
extraction links etc are welcome
thanks
peace

Its really easy to extract salvia, and make a 10x extract ,for example...youd need 99% isopropyl alcohol, 10g of salvia leaves...You soak the leaves in like 200 ml of alcohol in some airtight jar. Shake once in a while , for 3 days...Then filter  , so that theres no plant material in the green alcohol resulting...

Pour the liquid in some glass cooking dish, and wait (in a well ventiled room) for your salvinorin-rich alcohol to evaporate until theres not much left, enough to soak 1 gram of leaves...Now take a gram of plain salvia leaves , and mix it throughly with the green liquid, so that theres no more or almost no alcohol in dish...Now you really have to let dry long enough. There must be no smell whatsoever of alcohol, cuz isopropyl can make ya go blind and stuff...There you have a gram of potent 10x extract! really potent :nut:      Simple eh?

I don't really know how a single plant would yield...but id guess enough to make at least a gram of 10x...

Cool, sounds even more simple
But, is it not a good idea to have just one plant? I think it's possible to grow more plants from one. how fast do they grow?
thanks

indeed, making salvia extracts is easy.
They grow really fast!! you can easily make lots of cuttings from that one, just let it grow a little bit first. good luck

hmm this sounds dangerous, is there still a possibility of getting injured even though there is no smell anymore? what are the odds

and thanks Stefan, that's what I like to hear :D

After you think it's really dry just put it for a while in an oven on low heat to make sure all alcohols are evaporated..

Salvia grows VERY fast indeed. I got a plant about 1 foot tall in early Spring, by the end of Summer it was 5 feet tall (growing outside in England) and I had given some cuttings to friends, I then chopped it into more cuttings, gave a few more away leaving me with eight, each about a foot tall, at the moment I have them inside under flourescent bulbs, and have started taking more cuttings... I will soon have a forest!!
So you might not get much yield in the first year (I got about an ounce, dry) but the next year you can harvest a LOT! I would estimate that your number of plants/yield could be multiplied 20 times each year.

I wouldnt be that worried. Alcohols are pretty safe. They evaporate really quickly, Much better than water does.

sweeet as, but what do you really mean by "cutting"? Can the plant start growing by planting a part of it?, or do you have to cut a piece of its root when it gets larger?:D

No worry at all necessary. Isopropyl, even if you drink it, will mainly just make you sick and give you rreally bad gas and cramps etc...I knew someone who did tihs before. After it dries you won't be able to smell it, and if there was a really small bit left when you smoked it, it would be no more harmful than actually smelling the alcohol out of the bottle.

I'm not sure you can prevent them from coming, but examine your plants each day, and at the first sign of nasty creepy-crawlies get sprayin' with your favourite organophosphate. Or use a hot pepper spray or whatever if you don't want to use chems. Obviously if you do use chems, don't use the plant for a while afterwards...

While I could go get some everclear pretty easily, I already have some 91% isoprop... that's fine, right?

I've used 91% for 2 extractions, and they both turned out super strong and successful.

How long did the evaporation take? I have people leaving town soon, Can I boil it down a little to speed it up, or is that a bad idea? I have a double boiler and a pressure cooker....?

I used to make plenty of salvia d extractions, with simple household items (distilled water, acetone).

They work out great.

Excellent, I've got both those.  I'm not going to burn my house down am I? :P  I'm thinking about cutting the soak down to 2 1/2 days and boiling it off that night...  any idea how long it takes to boil off a bottle of isoprop on a double boiler or a crockpot or in open air?  I'm doing like a 24g extraction onto 2gs.... Sorry, I'm going to finish the extraction tomorrow, and I gotta make sure I got the whole procedure down so I can think about other things
