Is a tomato sucker similar to a clone?

Hey guys I was wondering if anyone could explain to me that if I took a sucker off of a tomato plant the is producing some amazing mutant fruits will the sucker have that ability as well once it's rooted and growing?
Or are the suckers just separate plants all together?

Unless something I don't know about is going on, I would imagine it would be identical when it grew up. I have been giving away tomato plants rooted from suckers all year and they are flowering well when they leave my hands... I imagine it would act the same - I mean, it literally is a clone. It has the same DNA and everything.

I guess you're right. I took a sucker from a Jet Star I gave my aunt that produced some awesome mutants. I was just hoping these suckers would produce similar mutants.
This year seems to be the year of the mutants so I'm planning to start that mutant thread we were talking about. I just gotta find time.
I have a ton of awesome pics already and I know I'll have more in the near future.

Tomato Plants will make Arial roots, like say.. a mint plant. ... Look at the bottom of your plants. Sometimes 3-4 inches up from the soil line, you can see some of the vestigal roots above soil line. What this means is.. you (might) be able to to try making cuttings from the plant. (I do not have the right environment to try making such cuttings, as Ideally, I would want a humidity chamber to make tomato plant cuttings, for myself. The cutting from your plant should be identical to the parent spaceman. The other thing I can say about tomato plants and humidity,.. is they often get Mold, virus. . etc. .so. .I haven't really bothered with taking cuttings and just propagate from seed.
Many of us who live in North America see Tomato plants as an annual, but Many Lycopersicon species (if treated right), can end up as a "tender perennial". I wish you luck with it.. Yeah your (sport) should be same as the parent, if you were able to get the sport by arial-layering (bend a stem of the plant to ground, and cover part of the stem with earth. That has worked for me in the past with other kinds of plants.. and I know it (can) with tomato plants. . I just have not personally tried it, yet spaceman

Indeed suckers will be clones of the original plant. You don't even need suckers to clone tomato's. Just lop off any healthy branch and stick it in moist soil under a humidity tent. Useful if you want hundreds of them I suppose.

I've read that in some species of plants cloning (as opposed to seed grown) can lead to lack of vigor and fruit production. You might want to keep an eye on that and see if it's true for tomatoes.

Could be... IDK about tomatoes though, I've had a few people tell me they root their suckers as well... I'll have to check in with the people I gave the plants to and see how they are going.

I'll let you all know how my suckers fruit and I plan to sucker the suckers down the road and grow throughout the winter to see if the fruits slow.
Kind of a test of sorts.
I'll keep you all informed.

I grew a bunch of tomato pants from seed a couple years ago, Pretty much all of them very strong. I took 2 cuttings from a particularly productive plant and their growth was very sub-par. So much so I didn't even grow them out. That's a very small example, but I never saw that kind of stunting with seeds, might have been an infection or something.

probably so. I'm working from suckers so that basically the beginning of a new plant or stalk so maybe that will work differently.
Maybe or maybe not. I don't have anything to loose except for 4 dollars on my electric bill so I think it's worth it
