XP multiple copies boot question
    #2185010 - 12/17/03 12:02 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hi,
I have XP installed on two harddrives in my system, one is optomised for music production, the other for general computer stuff.
When I boot, I get a choice of which version to boot from.
I have recently removed the hard drive which has the music version of XP installed, becuse I have fitted a new scuzzi drive.
I installed XP on the scuzzi and now I have 3 options of XP to boot from, BUT 1 isn't there anymore (drive removed)!

Anyone know how to remove the option of booting from this disk that's gone??

Thanks in advance.

You need to edit the boot.ini located in c:\    (root dir of primary boot partition).  The file is usually system/hidden.  Use attrib from command line, or change your folder view options to see all files including hidden and then modify the attribute settings of boot.ini so that you can edit it.  The file is text and pretty easy to understand.  There will be a line for each drive that you can boot from.

Donno if this is the approved MS way of doing things, but it is how I have always done it in the past with win2k.  Save a copy of boot.ini in case you screw up.

You can change the boot options in the system properties (the options window that contains the manufactures name, the hardware tab that leads to the device manager, you can get there with win key + break or right click my computer -> properties) as well, i forget which tab its in and might even be inside a button on one of the tabs, but it provides a gui to adding and removing entries, as well as a button for just opening the boot.ini. You should recognize the options page when you see it, as boot.ini is someone on the page and the . kinda makes it stand out. Then again i could be remembering wrong, but im 99% certain ive pressed a button to bring that file up in notepad.

But the moral of the story is its gotta be one of the MS approved ways.

damn, there i go using the quick reply wrong, that ment to be a reply to seuss, clicked the wrong one =\
