Allmusic, Discogs, Resident Advisor, Pitchfork, where do you read up on Musicians?

Been going to Allmusic for awhile. Their bios on artists and reviews of albums are top notch.
For instance, here's their thing on Mike Patton:
Quote:
Mike Patton could very well be one of the most versatile and talented singers in rock music. He may be rock's most valuable player as well, since he has divided his time between at least five projects: Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, Tomahawk, and an experimental solo career. Born in Eureka, CA, on January 27, 1968, Patton discovered his vocal talents when he and some high-school friends formed the whacked-out Mr. Bungle. The group touched upon almost every musical style imaginable and became popular in their region. The members of Faith No More first met Patton around 1988, when they were playing a show in the area.
The bandmembers were having problems with their singer at the time, Chuck Mosley, and gave a careful listen to a Mr. Bungle demo that Patton gave the group. They were blown away. When Mosley finally got the boot a short time later, the band set out to find a replacement. Since Patton was quite content with being a college student and playing with Mr. Bungle, he didn't exactly jump at the invitation (interestingly, the band also asked Chris Cornell of Soundgarden). Eventually he did change his mind, but made it clear that he would be a member of Faith No More and Mr. Bungle.
The Real ThingPatton proved to be an important addition to FNM, as they gained worldwide recognition with releases like The Real Thing, Angel Dust, and Album of the Year. Mr. Bungle signed to Warner Bros., due in part to Patton's newfound fame, and released their self-titled debut in 1991 (produced by experimentalist John Zorn) and the critically acclaimed Disco Volante in 1995. Although they didn't acquired massive FNM-like success, they obtained a loyal and constantly growing fan base. Patton continued to work with John Zorn, releasing a pair of solo albums for Zorn's Tzadik label, in addition to guesting on tracks by Sepultura, the Kronos Quartet, and the Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E., among others. California A year after Faith No More called it a day in mid-1998, Patton launched his own record label, Ipecac. The label's first release was the self-titled debut by the Patton-led, all-star experimental outfit Fantômas, who also included former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo, Melvins guitarist Buzz Osbourne, and Mr. Bungle bassist Trevor Dunn. Patton then returned to Mr. Bungle, contributing to one of their finest albums, the Beach Boys-tinged California. He subsequently joined ex-Jesus Lizard guitarist Duane Denison's Tomahawk (featuring ex-Helmet drummer John Stanier and Melvins bassist Kevin Rutmanis) and formed the R&B/pop/electronic experiment Lovage (a collaboration with hip-hop producer the Automator). He also contributed tracks to Tzadik Records' tributes to Burt Bacharach, Serge Gainsbourg, and Marc Bolan.
And it goes on.
Discogs, I go there, look up a band I like, look up compilations they were involved with and what other bands are on those comps.
Where are the websites you use to drum up new leads as far as music goes?

I've actually used your compilations method a few times. Good idea.
Discogs is great. Sometimes I'll just start combining genres in the top left, and then mess with the view options in the top right "most wanted, recently added, etc"
Record labels and media outlets. Media outlets such as Bleep, Insound, Redeye, Stonesthrow, etc..
Youtube. Spotify.
Last.fm - similar artists.
Tastekid - search for similar artists, movies, etc
That's just off the top of my head.. I have a feeling I'm forgetting something. Lately I have been listening to some music I haven't listened to in a while so I havent been seeking anything new out.

Thats a lot of websites I need to look into, thanks!
Don't really understand how you're doing that thing with 'view as' on Discogs.
I like when people (that are more involved with the site) have an album I like in their 'list' (which shows up at the bottom of the page)... always cool to see what similarly appreciative fans also listen to besides whatever I know about. Especially if it's a rare find. One reason I visit torrent sites, is for this reason. Hell, I remember limewire! And one of the best parts was browsing people's HDs and seeing what all they had in their collection.
I really like the allmusic Related Artists, Artists Moods, and Artist Themes. They're kind of hit-or-miss with the recommendations but I appreciate the effort all the same.
Here's the entry for Luke Vibert:

That's pretty cool that you can search by moods/themes. I'll check that place out.
Have you heard of SoulSeek? Don't know how I forgot to mention it. Its a P2P file sharing program, 100% legit and safe, unlike Limewire and Kazaa and all those big names back in the day.
You can create a name, search and download music, but also go through other peoples collections of music and download entire folders or just files(songs). So it's kinda like what you were talking about.

Also, my bad, on Discogs it's "Sort". I wasn't looking at Discogs when I described it as "View as". So, after I've combined some genres on the left side of the page, I'll use the Sort function. I usually just switch between "Recently Added" and "Most Wanted"

Oh yeah, another fun way to find music is through your FM radio.
Use http://radio-locator.com , type in your zip code, and see what's hidden in the airwaves. You can see what the station plays under the "Format" column (Jazz, Relgious, Country, etc).
Then, use Shazaam or what ever song ID app when you come across something cool. I think iphones can do it now, too.

Rateyourmusic, Last.fm, and wikipedia mainly. Kind of hate the community on RYM but the site just contains so much valuable information about so much music.

Yeah, now I see what you mean, you're on the mainpage of Discogs. Of course, what was I thinking? I'm always going straight to the artist's page so I never even thought to look on the mainpage. Cool to know, I'd missed that. Also, will check out that website.
Knew about the radio-locator site, I love listening to WFMU and KALX!

Haha, I know how ya feel. There's a handful of cool people that keep me online at all. Otherwise, I'd just be listening to music... and being bored, probably getting out more.

Metal-archives is a good site if you want metal, otherwise I mostly use bandcamp and smtube to find new stuff. Discogs can be a good resource if you just want to find out something like the artist's discography. I occasionally read reviews at pitchfork for albums I have already listened to, but they're rarely interesting or even well written.

Allmusic does a good job with reviews, there's positive and scorchingly negative ones there as well. I like discogs but it's a pita to find who's featured on the albums.
Aside from looking up the artist's page then navigating to 'Credits' > 'Instruments and Performance' you may never know alll the albums Herbie Hancock played on. And even then all you get is a list of albums. (Once you already know the musician.) Allmusic does it slightly better, but needs to fill in their database, outside of jazz and stuff, more.

@Bryain - Good call . Metal Archives has been the go-to place for some of my metal head friends for years. I personally don't use it, but it's a great place to discover new and old metal of all types.
Another decent place to source new music is Digitally Imported. DI has a lot of radio stations to choose from.

Yeah, I like that one too. I think Prog-Archives is another decent site.
WATMM, decent but a bit uptight. Got banned for naming myself ChiefSmackAHo. Oh nooo! Not even a chance to change my name.
IDMForums, sucks. Banned there too for not kissing major Mod ass. That was funny.
Where else have I been banned? Plenty o places.
Usually I'm just on RUTRACKER, looking for new releases and plowing through those to see if anything good shakes out of the shuffle.
