He got that from Joe Rogan. Doug doesn't know shit about the science and couldn't care less. Joe Rogan has countless rants about his vast so called knowledge of all psychedelics and specifically DMT. I guess he's done it enough to be able to explain the feeling, but I'm not too sure about the science part. Well, I guess he must have picked up quite a bit considering he was involved to some degree in the movie DMT: The Spirit Molecule.

Right at the beginning of this vid is the little death aspect that most likely got stuck in Doug's head.

I think Doug hit the nail on the head with his explanation of after the trip you realize how stupid and insignificant your physical life is when compared to your existence while tapped into the universal mind during the DMT trip. Another spot on one was him having the feeling like an adrenaline shot of pure meaning of life knowledge. Doug is more of a nihilist than the spiritual type of guy that Joe is, but I think he did one hell of a job trying to explain it with analogies so his typical fan base could understand and get a laugh in the process.
